She had been sound asleep when her bedroom door opened, creaked, letting out a thin ace of light coming from the dimly lit hallway. Eyes opened at the sound, blinking a few times before adjusting to the darkness. Polly sat up, eyebrows furrowed as the figure made an appearance. It was then when she flew off her bed, his name foreign as it rolled off her tongue.
Hands were trembling, her whole body was trembling. This had to be a hallucination. She was finally going insane just like everyone claimed. It couldn’t be. Betty had told her he was gone. Betty had told her and she had cried herself to sleep for nights. She had become a ghost roaming the hallways and gardens in complete and utter silence to the point in which she forgot the sound of her own voice. Betty wouldn’t lie to her. She wouldn’t lie to her but he was there. He was there and her hand was extending towards him.
A few steps were taken, cautious, ready to convince herself that it was nothing but a beautiful illusion. Oh, how it would hurt. That moment of realization. Fingertips came in contact with the warm skin of his cheek and she pulled away with a gasp, eyes widening and feelings conflicting. She wanted to run into his arms, to hold him, to kiss him. But she was frozen, stuck in place at the sight of the love of her life.
