The Hjulstrƶm Curve
Critical erosion velocity: Velocity required to entrain a particle lying loose on the bed of the stream
Fall velocity: Velocity at which particles of a given size will cease to be in motion be deposited
Clays & silts
Require a high critical erosion velocity to be entrainedĀ
Due to their high degree of cohesiveness and tendency to cling together
Donāt have a fall velocity because once entrained they remain perpetually in transport as they require very little energy to be suspended
Sands
Easiest to be entrained
Unconsolidated and do not cling together, unlike clays and silts
Implications: easily eroded
Pebbles, cobbles and boulders
Not very easily entrained, require a high critical erosion velocity because of their weight
High fall velocity as well, meaning that they are deposited very quickly after being eroded
How are sediments useful?
Sediments give us clues to past environments, with fossils and layers. They can tell us the direction of the water or wind during that time period, and with graded bedding, they could tell us just how fast or slow the water/wind was moving. They can tell us just what kind of life lived in this environment, how many there were, whether they were land or marine creatures.

Sediments are formed from weathering and erosion of rocks. They come in a multitude of sizes, from very very fine (silt and clay) to very coarse (gravel, pebbles,Ā boulders)
