Solana wasn’t a light sleeper. Which is why when she was woken by a loud crash, the twinkling crush of broken glass, she immediately knew something was wrong. Rocketing out of bed, she removed the loaded pistol from her nightstand. Still in her sleep clothes, she was urged out the front door by the commotion outside, screams and loud banging.
The building had only a couple of functional floors, one of the few structures salvaged from the attack months prior, but families lived here, too. Just across the way, another turian family, stilil rubbing their sleepy eyes, had opened their door to see what was going on. Loud noises were coming from downstairs, but it sounded like it was also coming from outside - multiple attacks. She went up to them. “Stay put in your apartment,” she said. “If they come up here, stay quiet and hidden. I’m going downstairs.”
There were other people down there. They were in danger. Solana didn’t hesitate to swing herself over the stair railing and land on the ground floor. She didn’t immediately see any hostiles, but a few turians were on the ground outside in the hall, a few bullet holes scattering the walls, and she was worried that she saw a fire flickering beyond one of the doors. Rushing out the front door of the apartment building, she found herself in the midst of absolute chaos.
“Fuck,” Solana murmured. It seemed like an organized raid - several shelters were being attacked at once, people being terrorized. She didn’t even know where to start. She took cover behind a parked vehicle. Peeking around it, she saw a few children, alone, cowering in an alleyway. She had to get over there.
Running through the gunfire, Solana sprinted across the street. A bullet narrowly missed her foot, but she made it. “You guys have got to get out of here,” she said, ushering them to the other end of the alley and out of the complex. Then she turned back to observe the fight, see if there was anyone else who needed help getting out.
