“…I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You're a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone
And I was singing this song to you…”-Donny Hathaway, A Song For You
We celebrated and honored my incredible father, the scholar, poet, and artist, Dr. Ralph DeWitt Story, this past Saturday at our home. We were surrounded by close loved ones, family and friends who all loved and cherished my Dad. His transition off of this plane has been both heartbreaking and surreal. I wasn’t, we weren’t prepared at all. I know though, I never would’ve have been prepared. I guess I always thought that a light, as bright and as iridescent as my Dad’s would never go out. I still don’t believe it has. I see his twinkling light in my own eyes. I hear his kindness in my wife’s voice. I see his generosity, love and brilliance in my mother’s laughter and advice, and I feel his warmth and great big love in Missy’s embrace. I hear your wisdom every time I talk to your best friend, and my brother, Ricky Fountain. Although you have left this earth Dad, your light, love, and everlasting spirit lives on within all of us. I miss you madly, endlessly. We all do. With great love comes great grief, and although I’ve always been skeptical of a heaven or a thereafter, it does feel good to picture you there, with mo and papa and Louie continuing to love one another. I will honor you forever, as my love for you has been limitless. I will continue to make you proud, 24/7;365. I promise. Peace, light, and progress to my extraordinary father and friend. Thank you so very much to close loved ones and family that have been holding our family close to their hearts and keeping our hearts in your prayers. Thank you so very much to everyone who sent cards, gifts, books, goodies, beautiful floral arrangements and wind chimes to our home. Thank you to all of our beloveds who flew into town and drove miles just to hug us, love on us, and for us to know that they are here for us. Thank you so very much to all of my father’s former students, mentees, colleagues and friends who have reached out to me, sent us things, and mourned alongside of us. All of you have made his transition so much smoother for me, for us. Thank you all for saluting my daddy while he walked this plane, and now that he is with the ancestors. Salute to my daddy, one of the greatest men who ever lived!! . ÀS̩E̩ 🙏🏾🕊❤️🙏🏾🕊❤️💯 RestEasyDaddyTheGOAT
