Lena Oxton and Gabriel Reyes stand isolated in the lone circle of light piercing what seems like an endless expanse of darkness. Lena freezes as Gabriel raises a pistol and levels it at her chest.
âIt neednât end like this,â Lena says, spreading her arms wide and stepping towards the man. âWe were comrades once.â
âNo longer,â Gabriel says coldly. He pulls the trigger.
A loud bang echoes through the room and a puff of smoke rises from the barrel. Lena howls in pain and stumbles backwards, clasping at her chest. She teeters and finally falls backwards against the hard wood beneath her.Â
Thereâs a moment of uncomfortable stillness as silence replaces the echo of gunfire. Then a spurt of blood explodes from beneath Lenaâs starched white shirt, arcs through the air and splatters on her face.
âFawkes!â she yells from the ground and sits up, a look of complete frustration painting her face.
Gabriel takes one looks at it and starts laughing. The rest of the lights in the theatre come on as Lena rises to her seat, another kind of red rising to her cheeks. She stalks into the wings and finds the lanky Australian prop master.
âWhat are you even good for Fawkes?â she shouts, grabbing a towel as she does and wiping off her face. âThe blood packets are supposed to explode when Gabriel fires, not after. Bloody fuckinâ Hell, mate, get yourself together!â
She takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. âSorry, sorryâŚâ she says apologetically, âRehearsalâs just been grueling and my fuse is short these days.â
