I remember when a good friend of mine told me that Zev Love X from K.M.D. (R.I.P. Subroc) had reinvented himself as MF DOOM. As a fan, I was intrigued but I didnβt know what to expect. Maaaaan I listened to Operation Doomsday on wax and it was the most exciting record that Iβd heard in years. The combination of clever and often introspective lyrics, Marvel comics references and the simple but ingenious production hooked me immediately. A brother who was very dope as a youngster became even better in middle age. The mask made us focus on the music as opposed to a corporate-fantasy driven image. He was a real life Dr. Doom but the villain was the hero. Watching his career: the collaborations, the quirky performances, his ever impressive lyricism; all of it was and is inspirational. Mr. Dumile ruled his territory on his own terms and weβre all better off for it.
