Before you died, I assumed. I assumed we’d grow old together. I didn't know that 51 years is where it all would come to an end. I didn’t realize that the years to follow, I would grow older without you. Today is your birthday and almost 7 of them have been in Heaven. At times, I can close my eyes and we are talking and it’s like you were alive just yesterday. Other times....and these are the times that scare me, the memories seem so far away, that it almost makes me yearn for the harsh feeling of grief, where everything is so fresh and painful, but the memories are so close to my heart. Today, it feels wrong to just have a normal day...like this day isn't significant to me. Desperately, I don’t want you to be forgotten. It feels messed up that I can’t tell you “Happy Birthday, punk”. Despite my feelings that you died too young or that we didn’t do enough, there is thankfulness and grace and assurance that you were taken on the perfect day. That God is sovereign and your days were numbered and it was perfect. There is peace in this. Until we see each other again. Happy Birthday, Manny. I love you.
