Luossabacken is located 145 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. ‘Solar Egg’ created by internationally renowned artists Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström draws inspiration from Kiruna’s Arctic climate, where light conditions change with the seasons from 24-hour winter darkness to round-the-clock midsummer sun. The egg shape seeks to symbolise rebirth and new opportunities at the start of Kiruna’s urban transformation. A project that involves the relocation of entire city districts in response to ground subsidence caused by decades of iron ore mining. ‘Solar Egg’ is an homage to Kiruna’s iron ore fields. Riksbyggen is a Swedish urban developer and the first to build new apartments in the new Kiruna. Kiruna's relocation is being overseen by ‘White Arkitekter’ which has created a masterplan named ‘Kiruna 4-Ever' that details the phased strategy spanning the next 20 years. The plan was shown as part of the ‘Venice Architecture Biennale’ in 2014.
