i think there’s something very tranquil about working nightshift on a rig. i mean you either get a nightmare shift (in which case it wouldn’t matter if you were on days or on nights) or you get those nice, chill shifts (which luckily, is what i tend to end up with on nightshift) in general i love it, prefer nights over days anytime. things just seem so much more peaceful - though calling things peaceful when you work on a drilling rig seems like a bit of a contradiction... but the world is asleep. you don’t get 104810481 emails from the guys in town constantly checking up on you. and let’s face it, everyone knows i’m a night person and NOT a morning person (if i ever look like i’m about to murder someone, check your watch, i’m probably just still half asleep) and yeah you always seem to somehow end up more sleep deprived than the people working on days, even though you are both doing 12 hour shifts. and yeah in the winter time you can go the whole trip without seeing daylight. and sitting in your little container can feel like sitting in a freezer and you have to sit with your scarf wrapped around you, pulled up to cover your face and ears. and you have to wear 2 shirts and a jumper just to feel slightly warm. and don’t even get me started on my poor toes - but such is life. and you always seem to hit that deliriously tired point around 4am (that you just don’t hit at 4pm) and you randomly end up on youtube watching hilarious videos of people singing moana songs really badly... (for the full effect watch this video at 4am) tonight has been my 3rd nightshift of this hitch (day 40 in total) and there is something profoundly triumphant about seeing the sunrise when you’re on nightshift. like when gandalf arrives to the battle of helm’s deep, it signals that there are only a few hours left and urges you onwards. but man i feel i have been pushed to new heights of endurance with this hitch. i’ve taken some hits, and i’ve been so tired that i couldn’t think straight, couldn’t accept constructive comments, wanted to cry over the most ridiculous things, and just felt like an absolute failure. but this is how you learn, and this is how you get stronger. (with the help of your babes that catch you and build you back up when you get kicked down) but still, thank flip we only have another 24m left of this well to drill.
