Jimmy takes one pace down the stairs. Tango takes two paces back, keeping his eyebrow high. Oh. Jimmy makes himself stop. He can’t keep getting closer; he might scare Tango, and he might lash out, and he might take damage.
“You can think about it. I mean… if you’d like to. It would really mean a lot to me.”
In which Scott, Martyn, and Jimmy all pull the rug out from under their partners on the same night. Or… their partners and also Jimmy's ambiguous bud, I guess.
(First 1,200 words under the cut - mild #trafficshipping & heads up for Scott daydreaming about carrying Cleo's robes while she roleplays, which is worth a warning in this context. Task requires zero allay hybrids for... obvious reasons)

Mother Moon wears white like a bride, but her sword is poison-tipped. She yanks his eyelids back like they’re hooked on marionette strings, nostrils flaring at her command. With every step he takes down the hall back to his and Cleo’s room, Scott walks with his head high, as if a warm metal blade is pressed against his throat. Something red and hot and boiling blossoms in his chest, Cleo tugging the allay bond from just a chunk away. It’s cool. It’ll be cool. It’s… It’s weird, for sure, but it’s one conversation. He’ll be fine.
It’s like I’m talking to Irene and Linda. The Rotten Dragon and the Phantom Dragon. A lie, sure, but when he sets the scene inside his head, somehow it turns discussing what happened with Martyn and Cleo into a thing he can survive. If he can converse with their mums, he can converse with them. They’re on equal footing here.
When he eases the apartment door in again, Cleo and Martyn have moved to the couch, where they’re whispering with heads bent close. Scott can feel Cleo’s spiking nerves, but not their spoken words. Um. He veers mid-step towards the sink to fill a cup of water. Gods, he hates all of this. The people who like throuples seem to work them out, like it comes naturally. Scott’s far too particular about what he likes to gamble it all on juggling, but he admires those willing to risk the mess. To be clear, he isn’t bothered by Martyn specifically, but he wishes they weren’t talking in the room. This is his space too.
He drinks his water. Keeps his feelings folded at his chest. His duty is service with a smile. He’s not here to alter behavior; he’s just here to observe.
And I’d really like to drop my head in Cleo’s lap.
Scott jolts. He feels Cleo’s heartbeats startle, which it nothing he’s not used to. That thought about their lap, though, is something else. And Scott has seen Cub watch a squall with Scar curled peaceably against him enough times to recognize it.
Oh my gods… I really am becoming a vex! Even in my brain. With a shaky hand, Scott lowers the cup to the sink. He stands for three seconds, then rinses it out. He can feel two pairs of eyes burning the back of his neck. Why does this feel even worse than when everyone confronted him in Pearl’s apartment about possibly eating Sniff? Scott swallows, dries his hands, and walks over to join them in the living room.
“Hi. So, um…?”
“Yeah.” Cleo takes Martyn’s shoulder, gathering floppy head feathers in her fist. He looks at her in question. She guides his head down, nestling his cheek against her lap. “You can cuddle if you want, but you have to go on Deafen. I want to talk to Scott in private.”
Scott’s muscles tense up. Um. It’s not exactly polite - or super safe - to expect someone to shut their ears off, muting all surrounding sounds… But when Martyn looks up at her, Cleo’s stare is very firm. He gives the faintest nod. And Scott’s throat fills with scuttling endermite claws. My gods, how long have they been partners?
Martyn feels behind him for a pillow, which he moves into Cleo’s lap. Right. Smart; that will stop him from sinking through. Cleo scruffs her fingers in his feathers and Martyn Deafens without complaint. A couple clicking noises trickle through the air as internal systems adjust. He looks… pliable? Ready for instructions. His eyes dart up; Cleo lowers a hand to block them out.
“And no peeking, Mr. ‘Grew Up With Otters and Can Lip-Read.’”
“Ooh, hot,” Martyn says, but Scott can tell his hearts aren’t in it. He guides one wing towards his beak and starts chewing around one of his few feathers despite the awkward angle. He might be Deafened, but he isn’t Silenced, and every rustle of beak against phantom membrane sends a twitch down Scott’s back. He clears his throat against his fist. Should he sit? Maybe he’ll stand. No, maybe he’ll sit… on the coffee table. Erm. Maybe not. He settles for bracing himself on his hands, tapping lightly at the wood.
“So, um. You and Martyn?”
“It’s not…” Cleo looks unsure, waffling their bond. It twangs against his skin. “It’s only physical. Just, you know… settling down the mob brain. I don’t get my costumes out for him.”
Scott bites his lip. You never let me see you in costume.
Oh, shoot- Something wildly tangled and undefinable flares like a star inside his chest. Scott puts a hand there, pinching skin with respawn-sharp claws. He didn’t mean to come across this cranky. Um. He and Cleo don’t- They actually don’t talk about her costume thing. He’s hung around long enough to catch them working on a sewing project, but they’ll usually finish a thread and put it up shortly after he arrives. She’s shown him current projects, but never anything from The Closet Drawer. No. That place, even if he is her allay, isn’t his to touch.
He swallows spit again. What if I want to see you dress pretty someday, though? He gets that it’s a sensual thing for Cleo - He gets it, he GETS it - and knows playing dress-up is something she’s very sensitive about, what with her past life as a villager before she got bitten by a zombie young. Olivia can’t just raise zombies with her villagers for the exact same reasons Alice and Sylvia were never friends. So Cleo left her mum, left her home, and moved to Underdark Crossing instead. Maybe it was needed for the greater good, but the world of villager role-swapping was ripped away from her. She pours love in every stitch of every robe, cloaking herself in power (and control).
… Scott knows he has no right to see her wear her silly things. He’s curious for purely fashionista reasons. If Cleo ever flirts with him while wearing her gear, then wires got maaaajorly crossed- He likes men, and that’s never changing. No matter how much he wants to watch anime and eat giant pretzels with Pearl again, or how jealous he is of the way WellsGlazes looked at Scar like he held the best territory in the whole perimeter. What’s that even about? Ugh. That better not become a thing. Literally no one wants to see them gooey-eyed. If she were still a guy, Scott’d be tempted to ask her out. Might as well show her what an allay can do that a vex cannot.
He’s happily gay. Don’t forget that for a second. Cleo does not owe him a peek at her sewing projects. Those are her private things.
“I could bring your gear out when you’re with Martyn,” he blurts, then claps a palm over his mouth. The sting jolts his whole system. It hurts his hand; the flash of a glitch makes Martyn jerk up his head. “Cleo, I did not mean to say that.”
“It’s… it’s fine,” she says, cupping Martyn’s eyes again, but she looks as shaken as he is. Scott’s legs get jelly-wobbly. She doesn’t want him in the room. Not when she’s in costume. Scott tries not to let that rattle him, even though allays are a player’s friend. Maybe friends would just be in the way.
Not me watching in disbelief as Etho shows in his S10#15 video that he's started using Flashback for camera angles and montage scenes... Oh, it is a BIG DAY for fans who portray the cam accounts [and similar modern cam tools] as actual separate characters in art and fic.
Listen, when I wrote that 'fic about SnifferMyFeet becoming Etho's cameraman so he could still hang out with PiglinMyNose (Joel's cam) it WAS A JOKE-
One of the running jokes in Dog's Life is Grian repeatedly trying to set spawn in Skizz's bed (so he'll respawn in the Sushi Boys' base), so I'm very amused that apparently, Past Life Skizz is trying the exact same trap against Grian. Full circle...
LMFAO, I've been going insane wondering why the whole fandom was drawing Scott with brown hair in his Totoro hoodie when his hair is dark turquoise/green because I didn't clock until just now that no, it actually IS brown in Past Life...
... because it's not his OG Totoro skin, which I still had a NameMC screenshot of.
^ The Totoro Scott that loaded in my brain every time I watched Past Life, because I wasn't paying enough attention to consciously absorb that he did, in fact, change his hair for Past Life.
I've taken Past Life screenshots of this man and still didn't notice.
Perhaps I am the colorblind one...
For context, back in May 2024, I wrote Scott switching into his Totoro skin to hide a glitch on his hand and gray streaks in his hair, so I've spent a lot of time studying exactly what this skin looks like and what color his hair was... WHY did he change it? He did this to mess with me specifically........

Really enjoying the Square Hole getting so many kills because I feel increasingly justified about how in my 'fic Dog's Life, there's a giant drop that was initially called One Man Dead Drop, then Two Men Dead Drop, then Three Men Dead Drop, sldkfj...
My non-contextual post about the Square Hole being Grian's biological child in my fanfic lore got more attention than expected, so I made a family tree in the hopes of providing more context for anyone who wants it. is this helping.
(Lore context under the cut; some story spoilers; long post)
- All characters in the Pixels Imperfect universe are hybrids, born of mob-themed dragons; Grian is an exception because he was born in the Neighborhood Watch universe and swapped places with the Grian originally from the Pixels universe. In NW AU, Grian has parents (Bridget and Finn) who went Red when he was 4; he was taken in by Team TIES and raised mainly by Tango and Skizz.
-> "For Sale: Bird Wings (Never Worn)" delves into the Grian-Tango-Skizz dynamic. Through the power of lore coincidence, Tango and Skizz are also the ones who took Grian in after he switched universes (Chalaza, Chapter 12) - Non-graphic soul surgery scene
-> Grian spotted the Pixels versions of his parents living at the server hub in this Dog's Life chapter, but they didn't recognize him (Spotted them while arguing with BigB about their relationship dynamic, so click at own discretion due to trafficshipping)
- NPC_Grian and Robot Grian were built by the original Pixels Grian [Xelqua] after his YHS arc. Mumbo actually traveled with NPC_Grian after Xelqua left to study in the EVO hub; that's some fun lore I've been sitting on that I haven't found a place to bring up yet.
-> "To Err is Human" is a one-shot about Xelqua building NPC_Grian
- Pixels AU hybrids aren't capable of sexual reproduction, but if they eat enough golden carrots to get the love hearts up, they can tap foreheads and spawn "sparks" in nearby unclaimed beds. Sparks are imbued with roleplay data and can be placed inside a mob or build to give it life.
-> Sparked entities can show unique personalities and go beyond the usual limits of mob programming. They can even talk, if that's part of the roleplay they were given.
-> Because he came from the NW world, which does have sexual reproduction (and no dragon moms), Grian spends much of the AU oblivious to or confused about sparks. Insert joke about him freaking out at the end of Season 8 when his villagers started talking. In Pixels lore, they were sparked... lmao
-> Grian has the ability to see through the usual roleplay veil that accompanies sparks, and he still sees sparked builds as structures. In Dog's Life Chapter 11, Grian quietly asked Joel if he knew he was holding an armor stand and if he knew Hermes "wasn't really alive" - which really upset Joel.
-> Bdubs walks Grian through the process of sparking in Dog's Life Chapter 30 if you're interested in seeing how golden carrots work (T-rated; heads up for shippy scene).
-> Carrots are extinct in the Between dimension (where server hubs are), so sparks can only happen on-server nowadays. In other words, sparked entities can't leave their servers.
-> Martyn was adopted (as a dragon egg) by an otter and a raven hybrid. His sister also hatched from a dragon egg, but came out a mob instead of a hybrid. He literally has a phantom mob sister named Baby and this is just part of his lore. Do you see the problem with the fact that his parents can't spark her to give her extra sentience so she won't attack them?
-> Fun fact! Martyn's parents live in a hub where opal isn't banned, so there is an on-server version of Baby (who is a modded cat) who wears an opal collar that connects her mind to the version of Baby who lives in the server hub. This gave her all the memories of being a mob phantom, so she still attacks them instead of behaving like a tamed cat btw.
-> Martyn showed Bdubs a family photo of him, his parents, and Baby in Chalaza. Martyn is a phantom hybrid, so Baby's actually super chill with him. That's her flockmate.
- Grumbot was built in Season 7; he's played as alive and goes from addressing Grian and Mumbo as Creator 1 and Creator 2 to addressing them as his dads.
-> In lore, Grian has no memory of sparking Grumbot and it freaks him out. Mumbo, however, shared that scene with the reader in the last chapter of One and a Half Birds, where we learned it was a lot more subtle than the big intimate experience Grian's wracking his brain for.
-> Season 9 Grumbot technically still has Mumbo's spark because he traveled through time.
- Impulse helped Grian with Grumbot's redstone in Empires because Mumbo wasn't there (Grian doesn't remember this very well either).
-> Due to connection with the Grumbot hivemind, Emperor Grumbot considers Mumbo his dad; Impulse is just a spark donor
- Mumbo has actually built a working copy of Grumbot that lives in the server hub, and has secretly used opal (which is banned in the hub) to connect this version of Grumbot with the on-server Grumbot hivemind. This version of Grumbot is technically not sparked, but does consider Grian his other dad because of the hivemind.
-> Mumbo working on the agent body he put Server Hub Grumbot's mind in (One and a Half Birds)
-> Pearl and Rhetoric find Grumbot in Mumbo's house (Dog's Life)
-> Mumbo giving Grumbot a talk about staying hidden if anyone comes poking around, as Mumbo doesn't want him to be taken away because of the opals (Dog's Life)
- In Hermitcraft Season 10, Grian portrays his snail as alive, capable of doing its own thing without him. It's sparked. As far as Pixels lore is concerned, the snail is Grian's biological son.
-> I wrote about Grian and his snail in "Shut Up and Fish," where the snail gets hurt by seagulls and Grian takes it to Scar for a check-up (since Scar's a zookeeper and all)
-> It is, in fact, a really big deal that Season 10 Grian has gone through enough development to purposely want to care for a spark
- Pearl is an uninvolved donor for Gem's snail's spark, in line with lore about Gem's snail coming from space (Insert alien Pearl joke)
- Joel is a firefly hybrid; fireflies are famous for flashing their lights (their courtship behavior), so in-game fireflies and firefly hybrids get hit with flirting instincts pretty hard. Joel is willing to eat golden carrots and bonk foreheads to donate his half of the spark-spawning process if his friends ask him to, but only on the condition that he's just a donor, not actually involved in looking after the spark (unless he wants to be).
-> Etho has a whole plot arc about being confused and saddened that Joel will spark things with other people, but won't let Etho spark a ferryman or a messenger bird or something for his Empires world... There's a WIP I've been sitting on for ages about Etho babysitting Tom for Jevin and just being really hurt about it
- Hermes is Joel and Sausage's child in Empires Season 2; he's sparked.
-> The Pixels lore is that Sausage suggested this kind of roleplay to Joel behind the scenes and Joel agreed it sounded in line with his god persona for the season, so he was fine being more involved than his usual hands-off donor policy.
-> During the Hermit/Empires crossover, Joel told Jimmy he required his help to make a child (Tom). Mandy and Rat Ruck are in there somewhere too; lots of ambiguity over what happened there (I'm not entirely sure about their lore since a lot of it happened in streams I don't watch, I think?)
- All player accounts in the Pixels universe are born with a spectator twin (AKA a camera account). TwoMuchGrian is still in the Pixels world; he didn't switch universes like Grian. He knows about the switch, but considers Grian his brother (Even saying once that "he was Xelqua's twin by birth, but he chose to be friends with Grian).
-> Grian has no emotional connection to the Parrot Dragon, though (presumably) his body is capable of respawning in her nest if he dies in the Between dimension, the same way Xelqua would. TwoMuchGrian was born of the Parrot Dragon.
- Joel and PiglinMyNose are twins also (Pig is formerly LazyBeans26 and is still doing cam things with Joel on Hermitcraft nowadays)
- Rhetoric is Etho's spectator twin. Biologically, he's "accountless" and can't interact with blocks in a way that would update them, but he did look after SnifferMyFeet when he was a newborn ("Collector's Fee").
- Grian and Joel raised SnifferMyFeet after they smuggled him out of the museum exhibit Rhetoric was keeping him in (Sniff is from a one-off video where Grian and Joel took turns sharing the newly made SnifferMyFeet account in a race to beat the Ender Dragon). Sniff is technically their foster kid.
-> Sniff is an endermite hybrid, so he was spawned by the Ender Dragon. The Ender Dragon is the mother of all the other mob dragons, so technically all her spawn are on level with the dragons, but that's a whole separate piece of lore we don't have time to unpack right now.
-> Sniff has a lot of abandonment issues since he never knew his mother and Grian & Joel basically ditched him after the race to The End, but he does still crave reconnection with Grian and Joel, seeing them as mentor figures (or his dads, or his brothers, or his cousins... No one's really sure).
- While unrelated to the main family tree, Box is no doubt sparked. In Double Life, BigB and Ren both refer to Box as alive; BigB claims Box said its first word ("Ren") while Ren was out, and Ren gushed and said he was "such a proud papa." BigB also declares at one point that Box is growing up fast "and will need to find a soulmate soon," and makes several other references to Box's life such as referring to himself and Box as "we" (even making it a point to clarify he is specifically referring to Box, not Ren).
- Box is both a house and a living child, so it was technically adopted by Martyn and Cleo when they inherited it after Ren and BigB died. Insane move by divorce quartet.
- In Past Life, Grian refers to the Square Hole like it's alive and has a desire to grow and consume... hence my earlier post where I said technically, if he's calling the Square Hole alive, it's sparked.
-> Presumably, he sparked it with Gem, as [in my interpretation], Grian and Gem seem to be casting Pearl in the role of their child by telling her to go to her room, saying they're dragging her out on walks, and threatening to send her to military school so she can be a better villain. One can infer Grian and Gem are playing the role of partners if this is the case.
-> This then makes the Square Hole their child, alongside Pearl.
-> Insert joke about Grian getting sick because he got close enough to Gem to spark the Square Hole.
- Not pictured: Jimmy's obsession with trying to find someone willing to spark one of his pillagers (in Dog's Life, where he has a banner that makes him raid captain) so he can forcibly bind her to him as his roleplay daughter and she will surely not betray him in attempt to take the banner from him then. I actually have art of him and Romeo that I've been sitting on for ages, but don't want to post without additional context... He luff his most specialist girl in the world <3 I am so excited for they...
- Not pictured: MumboDrone & TrueSymmetry being married. It's just important to me you know.
