~ Game of Jacks ~ Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, South Africa. Charcoal, conté crayon and chalk pastel on 600mic (390gsm) grey DeHalm chipboard. Size: 77 x 102cm (30 x 40 inches). These giant “Dolosse” form an interesting geometric foreground to this Richards Bay seascape. Many harbour entrances and piers around the world take the full erosive brunt of seas and oceans in perpetuity. The Dolos (plural Dolosse) is a type of interlocking twisted-H-shape concrete tetrapod which, when placed together en masse, create a highly effective breakwater. Designed in South Africa in 1963 with the children's game of Jacks in mind, the Dolos has become popular throughout the world. These constructions not only form a protective barrier from the ravaging effects of the ocean, but also provide homes for many a creature both above and below the water line.
