i feel you so much, all the boys i meet are so stupidly stupid ugh
that or just so pretentious as though they're doing you a favour for going out with you instead of a gori
this is why i might end up like one of those aunties at weddings about whom all the other aunties always talk about ya know the whole 'did you know that she had 5 suitors but turned them all down because she felt as though she was better than them [GASP]'
Chapter 2
Alex straightened his glasses as he and Richard Parker hurried up the stairs to the Victorian mansion. The crowd of people standing in the doorway, soaking up the warm Croatian sun, paid him no attention as he walked through the metal detector. Smiling at the security officer he took a position in the corner that gave him a clear view of the entrance and the auctioneerâs podium. More people filtered in, alone or surrounded by an entourage, it was all or nothing here. And Alex knew that those who arrived alone were dangerous enough that they would kill themselves, those with an entourage were powerful enough to have people to kill for them. He couldnât decide which was a greater threat. He catalogued each face and compared it to the pages and pages of faces heâd spent the last week memorizing. Judging by the concerned look Parker shot him, he was right and this room was half filled with CIA and Interpolâs most wanted.Â
The one condition of multinational arms dealers meeting is that no brings weapons. All items for sale today would be delivered to their new owners in the coming weeks. Not everything that was going under the hammer today was weapon but you could be assured that its providence was filled with bloodshed. He fingered the dagger in his pocket, one of the pair that âJosephine Laurentâ had left embedded in his sleeves that night over a month ago. There hadnât been any sight of the phantom woman since, or Alexâs car. Heâd been told by an impressed Mickey Jones that the blade was made with fibreglass. It was a beautiful weapon, strong yet light and thin enough to be concealed yet sharp enough to make Alex bleed when he touched the point and best, undetectable to the metal detectors. The pair had to be custom made there were a pair of rose stems that wrapped around the hilt of them with a splash of dark red making them stand out. Alex had to admire her taste, knives werenât his weapon of choice but he could tell that these were an impressive pair and he had a feeling the ornamentation meant they had sentimental value to the lethal blonde.
The more important guests were being announced by the security guard as soon as they were through the detector so when Alex heard the name Amelia Palmer being called he turned his head in curiosity. An heiress to a multimillion dollar fortune Amelia Palmer was well known, but she was infamous for her reclusiveness. Considered by Forbes magazine to be one of the richest people in the country media outlets had been vying for an interview with her since her 18th birthday. Palmer hadnât been seen in public since 2006, so with the same curiosity as the rest of the room he turned to study her.
Alexâs jaw dropped in shock as âJosephine Laurentâ pushed her sunglasses up, pulling back her now dark hair and smirked at the assembled gathering of arms dealers. She spotted him at once, and her gaze softened momentarily. âOh shitâ Alex breathed.
âWhat is it?â Parker turned to him at once.
âYou remember when that lady who technically didnât exist tried to kill the Secretary of State while we were working surveillance?â
âYeahâ Parker said carefully.
âShe just walked in and introduced herself as Amelia Palmer.â
âYou sure itâs really her, thought you said she was blonde.â
âTrust me, I remember people who throw daggers at meâ he growled turning to his partner who looked concerned.
âAnd here I thought I was specialâ the voice that had been plaguing his dreams for the last month, only this time it came with a slight American drawl, came from right behind him and he whirled around to see the same smirk on her face as when theyâd first met.
âI take it you arenât actually Amelia Palmer? I canât of a reason why an heiress would try to kill the Secretary of state.â
âWhat little you know, Alexanderâ his name came off her lips easily and he stiffened. She chuckled and walked away looping her arm through that of the other brunette sheâd arrived with. The other turned to look back at the agents, while Palmer spoke to her.
âI take you didnât tell her your real nameâ Alex nodded, âand the fact she knows your name means she knows who you areâ he nodded again. âThat youâre CIAâ another nod. âOh weâre fucked. Could you please do something other than nod ?!â Parker grabbed Alexâs arm and he finally shook himself out of his trance and looked away from the retreating figure, âthereâs at least thirty people who have reason to hate us, and the other fifty are paid by that thirtyâ
She could kill them with a sentence Alex realized and from his partnerâs tight grip on his arm he knew Parker was worried. They were snapped out of their concentration as an usher announced the start of the auction. âWe canât leaveâ
"No that would just mean us surviving this" Parker grumbled as he walked away.Â
He took a seat with a clear view of the room, with direct lines of sight to the exits and the podium. Parker sat on the other side of the room to see the guests not in Alexâs view. He caught the flash of worry on his partnerâs face as Amandaâs assistant sat next to Richard Parker without sparing him a glance. Immediately Alex scanned for the fake heiress. He didnât have far to look as she slid into the chair in front of him beside renowned arms trader and member of the Bratva Adam Vaughan.
Vaughan was wanted in half the English speaking countries of the world on crimes ranging from theft to murder, yet Josephelia, as Alex decided he was going to call her for now, was giggling and clutching his arm. Once again he felt illogical worry for her, a woman who had tried to kill him, and was currently in possession of information that could get him and Parker killed. Yet he found himself gripped with irrational concern as Vaughan pushed Josepheliaâs dark hair off her shoulder and placed a large hand far too close to her thin neck. Â She shivered ever so slightly and her eyes met Alexâs. She looked away from him quickly and to his relief pulled away from Vaughan and settled in her chair facing the front of the room with what Alex was certain was feigned interest.Â
The auction progressed smoothly with valuable jewelry and ancient artifacts being sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Alex knew that the moment of truth was coming when Josepheila sat up straighter in her seat and Vaughan picked up his paddle. Whoever bought these weapon plans was going to move to number 1 on the CIAâs hitlist. Or more accurately whoever the buyer worked for would.Â
Bidding was fast and numbers were quickly into the millions of dollars. Of course it wasnât sold under the name of Stolen Department of Defence machine gun plans, no these people were desperate to buy an ancient Japanese scroll, fully legal in the eyes of the government. Even through Croatia was a non-extradition country they couldnât risk the heat that selling stolen intel would bring. Josephelialeaned forward intently as beside her Vaughan raised his paddle and raised the bidding price by 1 000 000 dollars and in doing so drove the prize into 8 figures. It was all over after that, and Vaughan was the proud owner of a traditional scroll.Â
The proceedings wrapped up not long after, and Alex watched as Vaughan turned the scroll end over end in his hands. Josephelia placed a careful kiss to his cheek and softly said âCongratulationsâ
She moved away and headed towards the front doors. He looked around for the woman sheâd arrived with and was shocked to see her standing with one hand on Parkerâs sleeve exchanging tense whispers as he bent his head towards her. Alex did a double take at that. âAlexanderâ her voice came from right behind him and he whipped his head around to see Josephelia standing there smirking at him. It was the smirk that did it in the end, he grabbed her by the upper arm and pulled her around the corner.
"Who are you?" He hissed at her.
"Didnât you get my message?" Hurt flickered in her eyes. Alex let go of her arm and grabbed his wallet from his back pocket. He flipped it open and retrieved the small slip of paper. "Ah, Iâll give you a clue dear Alexander"
"Donât call me Alexander" he snapped at her.
"Amelia?" Her assistant was standing at the end of the hallway.Â
"A star shines on the hour of our meeting Alexander" She whispered.
"What does that even mean?" Alex growled, her constant smirk was really starting to annoy him.
"I imagine weâll see each other again soon." She started to walk away but then turned back to him. "It truly isnât what you think" The American accent was gone, replaced with something that Alex couldnât quite identify. She reached into her purse and tossed something that flashed as it flew through the air to him. He caught the keys and by the time he looked up she was gone.
Alex rushed towards the entrance only to be meet Parker halfway. âThey just got into their car. We canât follow them we need to report back what happened hereâ
"Youâre right, of course you are" Alex watched Vaughan leave the fading sunlight making his light hair glow. "Hey you wouldnât happen to know what âA star shines on the hour of our meeting means?â"
"Been talking to elves have you?â
"Wait what?" Alex gaped at him.
"Itâs an Elvish saying in Lord of the Rings" Parker shrugged "what? I like those books"Â Alex flipped the card over in his hand and flashed her neat handwriting at him, "Yeah thatâs Elvish"
~~~~~~~~~
"Youâve got to be fucking kidding me" Alex shouted.
"What?" Parker jolted awake "whatâs going on?" He looked to where Alex was looking between his laptop and the slip of paper.
"She left me her goddamn phone number. In Elvish" he said in disbelief.
Parker laughed loudly, then seeing Alexâs serious face he said âseriously?â his partner whistled through his teeth âSheâs got styleâ
She had something, that Alex couldnât deny. He looked back at the neat script in front of him and looked at the last character a simple line / and back at the screen. It wasnât punctuation. It was a signature. Alex reopened a document heâd spent the last few weeks working on.
