hot take: killing off poe was more justified than rover.
sure, we'd built a lot more of a bond with poe, there was definitely some beautiful symbolism there, but. but. at least his death served a purpose. it was heartwrenching because it was a sacrifice, was it not?
my dear rover/danny, on the other hand, was also an npc dripping with insane potential, just like poe- the tragedy of the person that once was your everything not even recognising you when you're face to face? hello?? and then, blam, he gets fucking shot. we don't even have time to mourn him and it just feels so sudden.
i'm not saying rover shouldn't've died or that he's a better character than poe, but i do think he deserved a better death, y'all!
i was feeling normal about dead bird and egg and their relationship to edgar and how theyll always be compared :)
hey. kleptomaniacrow by elio mei and edgar allan and poe?
We were learning about Edgar Allan Poe in literature class and guess who I was thinking about the whole time

can i just say how unrealistic it is that every kid who saw poe for the first time knew he was a crow. bc do you seriously expect me to believe that these 11 year olds all know the difference between a blackbird, a crow, a raven etc? note that most of the reason i’m bitter abt this is bc there was some GREAT angst potential like every time someone mistook poe for a raven and edgar would have to correct them saying “uhm no he’s, he’s a crow actually. He was supposed to be a raven though,” and idk the constant reminders, the “so close yet so far” you know? this would ofc mostly only be relevant at the start but still like.
It's so heartbreaking that Edgar Allan and Poe were clearly named as a duo. Both in the literal sense of Tom naming them together, but also from Edgar’s perspective.
Edgar Allan, a boy who grew up among books. Edgar Allan, who grew up always moving, always seeing his father with someone else, never his mother. For whom the only anchor-point was his books and the hope that his raven would arrive. He must have known what he'd name his familiar for most of his life. Edgar Allan and Poe. A literary reference for a bookish boy. The name was so perfect.
How many difficult evenings had he spent picturing his life with Poe? He'd been calling Poe by name long before he arrived.
So even when Poe arrived as a crow. He was difficult, a bit of a nightmare really, but he was still Edgar Allan's Poe. They would go to St Churnley’s, and hopefully get everything sorted. Hopefully make the rest of their lives tied together at least bearable. Because there was never any doubt that the two would be stuck together, even if Edgar dreaded it at the time.
So when Poe died, the tragedy was twofold. Because they were just beginning to get along. Because it left Edgar broken apart, incomplete. Because now his very name is a reminder of who he lost. Edgar Allan and...?
Sure the egg showed up. But what else do you name it? Nothing else would ever fit as well as Poe did. No other crow could replace the hole he left.
OKAY edgar probably grew up thinking his worth was in his academic achievement because that is what his dad and granddad pushed as the most important, but poe denied his academic pursuits (probably destroying edgar’s self image because thats all he thought he was good at) because poe wanted him to be athletic and fight monsters and such. edgar had fun doing that and found that he was actually pretty suited to it. he found worth in his relationship with poe and his approval of what edgar did, so he redefined what made him important as his bond with poe (and the resulting friendships with the other three etc) so when poe died, edgar thought he was worth nothing.
so uh. nothing, just how pressure and stuff has destroyed and rebuilt and destroyed edgar’s self image
