Cool Down With Fruit Soup From Rex 1516 in Philadelphia!!!
We’ve run quite a few different recipes to help you cool off this summer, but soup is a first. You don’t often eat a soup to cool down, y’know? Unless it’s a gazpacho, but that wouldn’t really be appropriate for Sugar Loco. Plus, I’m not really sure if soup’s image has recovered from the whole…

Jill and Phill taste and chat Vinho Verde and Rose. Â Both wines are excellent and Phill is a bit inappropriately in love with Languedoc...!
Rex 1516
We recently enjoyed brunch at Rex 1516 to celebrate my Slip's birthday and I plan on going back very soon. Â This was hands down the best local brunch I've had in a while, and if you live in Philly you should go, soon! The restaurant has a unique vibe, with wooden speakers, old movies playing above the bar, and perfect high ball glasses that I wanted to bring home. Â It is going for a retro southern look and pulling it off very well.
The food was the real star of the show-- my mouth is watering as I write this post just thinking about it! Â I had two eggs over easy-- a basic brunch item-- but enjoyed them with a sweet potato hash, house made sausage, and cinnamon raisin toast. Â We both commented on how simple but awesome cinnamon raisin toast is-- why don't more brunch spots offer this as an option? Â It was served with homemade blueberry jam to boot. Â I savored every single bite of that plate!
Slip had the sweet potato biscuits and gravy which was flavorful and rich. Â Again, sweet potato can really make things interesting, and these flaky biscuits were great.
We shared a side of grits and it might have been my favorite grits ever, I kept going back for more even when I was full. Â They were simple, as grits are, but just done really well. Â Being full didn't stop us from ordering dessert, something I never do at brunch, but I couldn't resist when I saw fried carrot cake on the menu!! Â Honestly, I couldn't resist because everything on the dessert menu looked so great.
This sweet delight was accompanied by a cream cheese semifreddo, candied pecans on top, and a pineapple rum sauce. Â It was innovative and really, really tasty.
I can't wait to go back to Rex and try more brunch items and dinner, too! Â We had reservations, which I would suggest because it's not huge and did fill up. Â The other option is to sit at the bar, which I saw a lot of people do-- and I'm guessing this is the kind of joint that can make a pretty mean cocktail. Â For me, Rex 1516 has my heart, and I plan to try many items that they offer in the very near future!
