Oh, man, and Hikari doesn’t really speak unless she needs to, so whether Karen told her or she intuited it herself from what she overheard, she recognizes how important it is to make sure Mahiru knows she is valued.
I got something in my eye.

This imagery is so sad, with Karen as the innocent, unaware cherub, the fountain of her glory cascading down, and while the net under Hikari seems to catch it and keep much of it from reaching Mahiru (in her mind), it also leaves her looking sort of trapped and tied up... noticeably, she doesn’t seem to have made the net herself or anything; she’s just curled up in midair. Even in Mahiru’s misrty, she realizes that neither of them are trying to hurt her.
“I really do love her. But even without relying on someone else, I will...”
Shine.
Well that was really lovely! I’m so glad we got to dip into Mahiru’s psyche a bit, and I’m genuinely surprised we did so so soon-- I was expecting her building jealousy to be a main season plot, honestly. Getting people back on each other’s side is something I love, and I’m so glad it happened here.
I also ended up relating to her a lot, despite the fact that I haven’t done a lot of pining in my life (unless you count missing my girlfriend). That surety that the shine of those around you means that your own is insufficient hit me really hard, and her cartoony set as she tried to return to the innocence of her previous year with Karen was beautiful. And what a song!
I loved this one! I’ll see y’all with asks if there are any, but other than that, I’ll be back next weekend for Two Flowers on the Stage.

oh maybe they’re creampuffs not potatoes?
Mahiru: “I have no talent!”
Also Mahiru: *hurls a spinning mace 15 feet in the air and perfectly times three pirouettes so she can snatch it neatly out of the air at the other end*
I vibe with this baby who’s just putting her heart and soul into it
