When some people described Revelry, they said he had a habit of stealing, a compulsion. Habit was closer to the truth, but a compulsion implied an inability to stop, implied innocent intent and maybe even a desire to be better. Revel had none of those things. He stole, and he stole often, because it felt good. The thrill of being somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be, doing something he wasn’t supposed to do, it made him feel free, alive, joyous.
And he didn’t take from everybody. Sure, maybe that wasn’t as noble as it sounded, he was no Robin Hood, but he didn’t steal from people who needed their things, or people he knew were kind. It was about the act, not the reward, so he hardly ever stole coin, not unless his pockets happened to be light or the person happened to be swimming in it—or they were an asshole. So maybe he stole coin often, this was a city of rich assholes, after all.
If you asked him why he would steal things, he would reply, “Why not?” With a shrug and a gleam in his eye. “People are so caught up in what they should and shouldn’t be doing that they never actually live their lives. It’s ridiculous!”
Sometimes he sold the things he took. More often than not though, he found somewhere in his room to display it, or gave it to a friend or his sister. Most of the things he took were little trinkets that caught his eye, keepsakes, things that couldn’t be replaced. Sometimes he’d break back in a couple days later just to return something. Maybe to prove he could, or because he was bored, or sometimes (rarely, and he’d not acknowledge it,) because there was a gnawing underneath his chest, at the idea that someone might actually miss what he had taken.
But that didn’t happen often.
More often than not, he would break into a place and not take anything at all. His “hang out spots” included many small and large businesses, some empty summer homes, and abandoned warehouses where he could find them. It was a fun distraction, but certainly not one he pulled off all the time. The arcane marshals were quite familiar with Revelation Halovar.
