Ya know what, I might watch the movie just for the casting of a black man as L. Cringe at everything else.
I’m glad you mentioned black L!! Honestly, I was very excited about black L before and I totally get the excitement behind it.Â
Unfortunately, the fact that the majority of the main characters are white kind of overshadows that, and @complicatedmerary has actually made some really important comments about the subject that are definitely worth asking her about. Here’s some of the complaints against black L:
L is an outsider during the entire series. He’s weird, not super morally great, and no one really likes him. Even his name, “L” shows how much he doesn’t belong in Japan considering “L” is pronounced like “R” in Japan. Also, he’s English. So the fact that L is cast as a black man just doesn’t feel like an accident.
Regardless of whether or not he’s in the right, he’s still the antagonist. Of course the antagonist to the “attractive” young charming protagonist is a black man in a hood.Â
Of course the mediocre white guy kills the black guy and wins in the end. (God I hope they change that and make L win like in the Japanese films.)Â
He seems like the token minority, like he’s thrown in to say “no look! we’re diverse! L is black!” rather than anything else
WHY DID THEY MAKE HIM SO SKETCHY LOOKING IN THE TRAILER
HOWEVER
Although I’ve never seen him act, I hear he’s amazing and I have no doubt that he’ll be one of the stronger members of the cast.Â
hopefully we’ll get art of black L and that’ll be pretty great
some diversity is a little better than no diversity, at least they acknowledge that people who aren’t white live in seattle too
in conclusion it can either be really good or really bad depending on how it’s handled, and hollywood doesn’t have great track record for handling things like this really good, but at least black L is something to be optimistic aboutÂ
