(Battle flag of the 4th Galra Raider Company “Rethan’s Raiders”)
The 4th Galra Raider Company: Originally known as the “Fearsome Fourth”, the 4th Company was one of several Raider units deployed to the Sion Versa Campaign. While most Raider units are known for extreme acts of heroism and are propped up as the epitome of Galra ideals, the 4th distinguished themselves for something very different. During the campaign the 4th company fell victim to an ambush and became the first and only Raider unit in history to retreat.
Despite their later efforts to regroup and continue with their mission, word of their retreat traveled fast and the “Fearsome Fourth” became unofficially branded as “Coward Company.” News reached Galra High Command and the 4th was immediately disbanded upon their return from Sion Versa. Leadership was removed and prior service in the 4th was considered a stain on a soldier’s reputation. The stigma even became so great that some dropped out of the military altogether.
The 4th’s shame extended to more than just the company, though. The Raiders as a whole felt the blow of one of their own units being disbanded due to cowardice. In a bid to restore their honor General Mos Stomton, founder of the Raiders, personally assigned the decorated Captain Rethan Shoste as the new lead of the reformed 4th Company.
Rethan’s first order of business was to remove the “Coward Company” nickname. The 4th was trained to take the Raider’s shock trooper role to the extreme and he quickly made a name for himself by personally leading drop pod assaults from within enemy lines. This made retreat virtually impossible and made attack their only option. Their assaults became so aggressive to the point of near-suicide that the 4th Company became known as “Butcher Company” before receiving its official nickname “Rethan’s Raiders.” It would go on to become one of the most decorated units in the Empire itself.
Even after Rethan Shoste’s departure from the Empire the 4th Company still carries his name to honor the man who reformed it.
