something about the phrase “big kid/girl/boy job” has always sat with me weird, especially in the context of comparing retail/food service to a more traditional 9 to 5. like i transitioned to a full time role in a retail job and my parents still asked me when i was gonna get a “big girl job” and even now that i have transitioned to being a manager they still asked when i’m gonna get my big girl job. what about this job isn’t a “big girl job”?? i am trusted to run an entire store?? how can i be making more money that BOTH of my siblings who are considered to have “big kid jobs” but mine is not considered that? is it because i work in a store and they are teachers/office workers? what makes something a “big kid job”? because i certainly feel like i work one.
