Light is not predictable. Within each ray hold a million million particles, iotas of dust to shine and dance and gleam, to create the sunlight that dappled upon warm skin. They beat and collide, mimicking the comets and planets in their own way, causing supernovas and eddying holes no bigger than the heartbeat of a gnat.
Yet these still have a pull, as black holes are want to devour light, so too did this minute whorls and spirals. A river they made, turbulent as the pressures of the cosmos pressed tight against the walls, slow once more as the crepuscular beam fanned it's finger wide. All with a boat at mercy to each movement, a soul a ship riding the photons with a calm practise of a well-able seaman.
A god of light held no fear of that he owned possession over. Each part, each speck was his to steer and see clear. Much as truth came easily to his treacle tongue, honesty extending a little more grace in godhood than simply bound to tell no lie, so too was light the very core of Baldr as he drenched himself in it. Flesh of gold, the reflected core of the several billions of suns, it was star-flame that fuelled his lungs to work onwards like bellows, to coax his blood to run and heart to beat.
But light is not predictable. And it would be little fun if a mishap did not happen every so often.
Much as a weir, a crook in the stream where the waters nodded fair well and parted ways, it was a decision quickly made to simply drift, to wait until they landed on the shoreline of some other island or planet that had not been known before. So luck came to pass that the Aesir and his hosts came to the lands founded deep between giant tree root and softly-smelling mulch.
Not luck, so much, that had him before a stranger with cutting eyes, clearly some creature that lent a feline skill, yet watched with a gaze clear enough as a hawk.
"Exactly. If one can become corrupted and turn ill under the guidance of Dark Hands, does it not follow to reason that the opposite can happen as well? The dragon has already lost one leg to infection, I somewhat doubt he shall ever be a serious threat to you or our people, Henig. If you agree they are intelligent, then that means they are capable of making their own choices. I need to believe it is possible." Sighed he, "If it is not, then the responsibility of its death will be mine."
“A dragon does not need all of its legs to pose a threat. I do not recall anyone ever running in fear of a dragon’s legs. Dragon fire, on the other hand, I have seen many people run from.”
Thranduil was seething now. That much was obvious. He had his own bias, and his own experiences that helped form that bias, and he was entirely unwilling to change because it was a young dragon or because his father was raising it.
“They are an intelligent evil. It may seem like your care is effecting it, but some day we will learn otherwise, and there shall be much regret. But you are right; the responsibility of its death will be yours. And the lives of any innocents it claims… you will be responsible for them too.”
"As of just now, he sleeps beneath my collar. Beyond my person is another story, and will not be remaining anywhere near your Halls, of that I can assure you." After a moment too he added, more gently, "You know I love dragons no more than you, Thranduil, but they are just as evil as elves in birth. It is their raising that turns them wicked and greedy, and this one is but a child. Were you dead, would you not want Legolas adopted and taken care of, even if it was by a former foe?"
“How can you say that? They were made by Morgoth to be killers. That is what they do.” As he spoke, he was torn between moving away from Oropher and holding his ground. After a moment of consideration, he remained seated. “Will you keep it under your collar when it is larger than a horse? You cannot guarantee you will keep it from my Halls when it is too old to keep under your control. They have minds of their own, and those minds cannot be tamed, nor can the urge to hoard and kill that fill those minds be quenched.”
Thranduil glared at his father when he posed his question. “The only foes I have are the creatures created by the Dark Lords. And the only life Legolas would find with them would be one of torment and pain.”
Satisfied, Oropher gave him a nod of approval and answered; "As I was climbing the face of Caradhras, I discovered near its peak the corpse of a mother, and nestled in her ribcage a singular hatchling left and barely alive. I made the choice to bring home this child and nurse it back to health, but the nature of this beast is what you will surely balk at. Tis a dragon."
In somewhat relaxed silence, Thranduil listened to his father. Until the word ‘hatchling’ was mentioned; from that point on, he knew his father was right about how he would react. With every word leading up to the last one, Thranduil grew more tense.
Then he said it: ‘Dragon.’
In fact, he was more than angry. He felt something else too. Perhaps it was dread, or even something akin to betrayal, but he could not quite place the feeling. Regardless, it made him sick, and that was the only reason he didn’t advance upon his father as he had suspected he would.
“And where,” he began, words forced out from behind clenched teeth, “do you consider ‘home’ that you have brought this beast to care for? Not anywhere in this kingdom, I hope.”

"Thranduil, have you a moment? I have something to discuss with you, and am under the distinct impression that you are going to be absolutely furious. So, first and foremost, I would like you to disarm yourself, sit down, and swear to me you will not stand or approach me with violent intent." Said Oropher, quite formally.
“If you are under the impression that what you are going to say to me will make me so furious that I attack you, then I am afraid I will swear no such thing,” Thranduil warned, matching Oropher’s formality. However, despite his words, he did disarm. Though he did not presently have his sword, he did produce several concealed daggers and other such small blades, which he placed at a safe distance from himself before taking a seat. “But I am curious, and I do very much want to hear what you have to say. So I shall do my best.”
"Am I dead?"
curious honeyed irises peer down at the bone - pale tresses of the other, following a steady path to meet his eyes. they darken a bit, a flair of grayed - gold and a turn of his lips an almost - smile —- ”Not so — “ words are soft dulled to match the other’s tone ” — though, it seems, not for lack of trying —- “ beleg gives a curt curl of his brow, pulling his face away slightly to allow the other a bit of breathing room.
& -Oropher reached out on compulsion more than active thought. He reached for his son, and found one of the scars that broke the boy's fair veneer, following it with the tip of his thumb and a tension in the corner of his mouth. Partially guilt, partially anger, partially pride, tangled into a nasty jumble he could only name 'fatherhood' and stash away somewhere in the back of his mind.
Send me “&” for my muses reaction to yours tracing one of their scars.
“Father—” Thranduil tensed when he felt Oropher’s touch along the scar. His voice was taut; a precedent to the impending snap. The breaking point was being approached, but he it was not his father’s intent to push him there.
So he took a deep breath and lead himself away from that breaking point. “That one,” he began, his tone now much lighter and more pleasant than it had been at the beginning, “I got long ago. When I was very young. Before, even, the dragon.” He glanced back at Oropher, before returning his attention to what he had been preoccupied with before.
