Hi! This may not be the best place to ask this, but it's the best I can right now. So, how do I differentiate between empathy and responsibility OCD? I've recently been considering the possibility that I might have low empathy but I've never realized because I mistook empathy for responsibility. To be clear, I am not diagnosed with either.
CW: Description of reponsibility OCD (?), suicide/self harm
Whenever I see someone upset, my first though is not "Oh no, they're upset" it's "I can help them stop being upset" When my sibling fights with my parents, I check on them, but I check on them because I'm scared they'll hurt themself, though they have no history of doing so. Several times, I've tried to become closer with people, not because I wanted to be their friend, but because I knew they had mental health issues and I thought I could help them. I'm also the "mom friend" because I have this intense need to care for other people. But hearing upsetting things on the news doesn't upset me, even if I know it's wrong. There are other examples but none that I'm willing to list right now.
Now, this could be empathy/average responses, but I've also been considering the possibility that it might be OCD with a lack of empathy. I'm not asking you to diagnose me or anything, but if there's anything you could say to help clear this up, I would appreciate it!
Hello!
Hmmm, in my understanding empathy is the ability to feel what other people feel. It doesn't necessarily leads to action?.. And with how you describe it it's mostly about you helping people rather than you experiencing their pain.
It might be related to ocd if you put unrealistic expectations on yourself and feel anxious about not doing anything, even if it's not really something you should be responsible for.
I guess what I'm trying to say, it doesn't sound like an empathy thing to me?
Shout out to folks with Responsibility Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder!
me when my mental illness is illnessing my mental:
this part is so important ocd rep but also support and no judgement

If I did a live stream this week at some point talking about what it's like to have responsibility OCD, would people be interested? I fear this isn't a very well-known form of OCD and OCD itself is very misunderstood even by myself until I was diagnosed. And I want to know if the public would be curious and find it beneficial.
Finally had a therapy appointment again today but Iβm stuck in traffic and missing it!!!!!
