I’m currently having a hard time cultivating my feminist identity. On the one hand, I want to prove people wrong and fight the standards/bias/expectations that people have for women so I find myself: sitting and wanting to take up space, not showing extreme emotion in situations with other people, fixing my car by myself, building things, not needing help, not letting people hold doors open for me, not feeling the need to wear makeup or pretty clothing.
But my favorite professor pointed out to me today that i shouldn’t be figuring out who I am based on not needing men around or possessing qualities that society deems as “manly.”
So this year I’m working on just figuring out who I am as a person, and which of those things fit into me and what brings me joy. And also continuing to fight against society and societal expectations of gender roles.
