At the start of 2012 I figured out what I wanted to do with my skills, my passion, and my desired life.
Prior to attending college in 2007 I dreamed of being an architect. While exploring the scenery I couldn’t help but see buildings as a piece of mankind that helped define how we interact. Thing is I didn’t know until now that “helping define how we interact” is the underlying love I have for what I want to do in my lifetime.
A weakness that I've struggled with recently is the ability to fully carry out something and make a mistake. Instead I get in, rethink, and redirect to a coming soon page.
I've talked to a few designers about what I want to create and they all can wait to see what I come up with. Problem is I haven't impressed anyone, because nothing great has been created.
The initial version of what I created were 400 to 600 word articles thinking about concepts, practices, and processes related to the core ideas of design. A few articles were contributed by people other than myself. Problem was I began to feel uninterested and felt any more articles would be created just to grow what I had dreamed.
Then a second version was drafted up. This version would focus on essays or 1500+ word articles that looked at problems, issues, or discoveries related to the field of design. One was even published on augmented reality with a few others being drafted up behind-the-scenes. The idea was that these essays would be available online while a digital and print magazine would be created with these essays along with additional content not displayed via the website. As of now that magazine was 50% complete and was due to be finished mid-June. Problem was that solely relying on magazine subscriptions scared me, especially because of the brutal magazine industry and the fact that the supreme content would already be available for free on the website. Instead of realizing this quite possible mistake after releasing a few magazines, I assumed and predicted.
So a third version was quickly being thought of and worked on. 48 hours straight. This included pro and con evaluation, planning, sketches, and truly establishing something were the next "version" would be an iteration or addition. I couldn't sleep. I opened up Photoshop and designed everything for what would become the new website. I discovered that by building a design publication based off my favorite publication, The Verge, was the thing to do. Do what works, but figure out how you are going to be different.
See The Verge launched November 1st of last year and when there are so many technology blogs they've presented themselves as one of the leading technology sources today. I know there are many design blogs out there, but I knew anything is possible if you focus a few things to differentiate yourself from the masses. To remind myself of what Joshua Topolsky, Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of The Verge, was thinking prior to The Verge being launched I went back through time via Google search.
I found the "pre-launch" article as well as Josh's article on his Tumblr about what's next for him (regarding The Verge).
The "pre-launch" article highlights the reasoning for the name and what you can expect from them. Seven months after they launched I can say that they've held their end up. Both the direct and indirect message here motivate me to build out the third installment. I want to build something that matters. I want to matter.
I want to build a different desired design destination called Resimplify.
Then I thought about Josh's article on his Tumblr. He talks about why he decided to join Vox Media (SB Nation at the time) rather than just have The Verge be its own publication and its own company.
Reasoning is simple: he wanted to focus on the content and was only good at creating that content. I'm in the same boat. I'm in seek of joining an existing team or finding my "Vox Media".
The words "delightful" and "depended" will be added in good time.
