Meeting w/ engineers
Earlier today, I was able to join in on Pim's meeting with two research engineers. It's awesome to get to know them and have that connection, and it was also really interesting to see how they cooperate with researchers on their work. This is definitely a career avenue I would consider, as I enjoy collaborating on projects (and not being the only one working on it, or leading it). I also don't want to go as far as committing to a PhD, but this sounds like a great place where I can still apply my coding or STEM skills, but still be able to connect with and be involved in history work!
The two women (Shiva and Parisa, if I recall) were also very sweet, and told me that I could reach out to them if I needed advice on my work. I might take up that offer -- even if I have prior coding experience, my experience is far from work with texts or LLMs. There are also so many models out there on the internet when you look it up, and it can be overwhelming. I think having their advice, or reaching out to them for pointers / what they think the most appropriate models are, will be really helpful to my project too!
I also got to hear them explain their BERT modeling, use of LLMs and more. I'll put the link to their GitHub for my own access later. I'm very grateful for a chance to connect with these two women!
