It was warm today and I got off of work early (had a doctors appointment), so we went to the dog park afterward.

Bringing an abused or neglected animal into your home is an emotional and rewarding journey—but it requires patience, empathy, and understanding. At Infinite Hearts Dog Sanctuary, we’re committed to helping dogs heal from trauma, learn to trust again, and find happiness in a loving environment. One of these special souls is Lucky (formerly known as Rufus), our very first rescue. 🐕

Lucky has had a tough start in life, but he’s safe with us now—and we’re dedicated to making sure he thrives. Our goal is to integrate him into our family gently, build his confidence, and help him feel at home, whether he stays with us forever or finds his perfect family through adoption. 🏡❤️

🛋️ Creating a Safe Space

The first step to helping Lucky—and any dog that has faced abuse or neglect—is to create a safe and calm space where he can decompress. This space serves as his retreat, where he can feel secure and observe his surroundings without pressure. For Lucky, we’ve set up a cozy area just for him with blankets, toys, and his own quiet corner. Having his own space will help him adjust at his own pace, without feeling overwhelmed.

🐾 Introducing Him to Our Furry Family

One of the challenges in welcoming a new rescue dog is introducing them to other pets. At Infinite Hearts, we believe in slow, positive introductions to help build trust among all the animals. Lucky will get to know each of our three dogs—Pepe 🐕 (our spunky Pomsky), Penny 🐾 (our tiny but brave Chihuahua), and Jolene 🐶 (our playful Great Dane puppy)—one at a time.

We’ll start with neutral settings, keeping early meetings calm and positive, with plenty of space for everyone. Over time, Lucky will learn that he’s safe with his new pack. With patience and encouragement, our hope is that they’ll bond, creating one big, happy family. Our two cats, Tori 🐈 and Walker 🐱, will also get the chance to meet Lucky slowly, so everyone feels comfortable.

🕰️ Establishing Routine and Trust

Building trust with an abused or neglected dog like Lucky requires consistency. Routine gives animals a sense of security—they begin to understand that good things happen at predictable times, like meals, walks, and playtime.

Through regular feeding schedules, positive training sessions, and daily activities, we’ll help Lucky feel secure in his new environment. This predictability will reduce his anxiety and teach him that life can be filled with joy, stability, and love.

🍖 Positive Reinforcement and Gentle Encouragement

We believe in using positive reinforcement to build trust. Treats, praise, and gentle encouragement will help Lucky associate new experiences with positive outcomes. Whether it’s a friendly greeting from one of our dogs or learning a new command, we’ll celebrate every small step he takes toward confidence.

We’ll also work with Lucky to build his skills, preparing him for adoption. From walking on a leash to feeling comfortable in new environments, our goal is to ensure Lucky is ready for whatever life brings—whether he stays with us or finds a new forever home.

Healing takes time. We know that Lucky’s journey won’t happen overnight, and that’s okay. Every dog is different, and we’ll follow his lead, giving him the time he needs to adjust, feel safe, and learn to trust again. With every tail wag and every moment of eye contact, we’ll know that he’s on the right path.

Our ultimate hope is to find Lucky a loving forever home. Once he’s ready—both physically and emotionally—we’ll share his adoption journey so you can follow along. His future family will receive the happiest, healthiest version of Lucky, thanks to the care and love he’ll receive with us.

After two years of offering dog-sitting services, we’ve officially opened our sanctuary with a mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide forever homes for dogs facing challenges like abandonment, neglect, or medical issues. 🐕💕 Whether they stay with us or find their perfect family, every dog receives the care, love, and respect they deserve.

Supporting veterans and active-duty service members is close to our hearts, as I come from a military family. My stepfather, aunt, uncle, and grandfather all served in the military, and we are proud to continue that spirit of service through the sanctuary. 🎖️🐾 If a veteran or service member is unable to care for their pet—whether they’re deploying or facing an emergency—we’re here to help by fostering their companions or finding them a new, loving home.

Our journey began with our personal crew of fur babies—Pepe 🐕 (Pomsky), Penny 🐾 (Chihuahua), Jolene 🐶 (Great Dane puppy), and our newest rescue, Lucky 🐕‍🦺 (formerly Rufus), who is currently came to us from GA and Romeo (formerly Alfie) 🐕‍🦺 from SC . Rounding out the family are our two playful kitties, Tori 🐈 and Walker 🐱, who add even more joy to our home.

Through our blog, we’ll share rescue stories, sanctuary updates, events, and ways you can help make a difference. 🌟 Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, every act of kindness helps us give these dogs the second chance they deserve. 🥰
