Last night we said goodbye to Sandy. 🤍 I didn’t even have the chance to properly introduce her here or take beautiful photos of her.

She came to us from an intervention — from a place where she was about to be killed. We took as many animals as we could fit into the car. The rest were not as lucky.

She had been living in a cage made from a wardrobe. She was slipping on polished wood, had muscle atrophy, partial paralysis and severe mange. She had to learn how to move “like a rabbit” all over again.

After treatment and spaying, she finally had 100 meters of space, grass, and a real rabbit life. She was afraid of people, but she learned to come back at night and wait in the morning for her “delivery of greens.” Toward the end, she would come eat close to me.

After last week’s vaccination she developed severe diarrhea. We fought — probiotics, hay diet, syringe feeding, fluids, warmth, vet visits. Tests showed nothing. Yesterday breathing problems appeared. We couldn’t save her.

I thought she had long, peaceful years ahead of her.

We’re slowly coming back after a very intense stretch of days — work, exams, vaccinations, and a few health scares at the sanctuary.

Malcolm, our grey rooster, is recovering next to the radiator, wrapped in warmth and vitamins. We still don’t have a clear diagnosis, which makes the waiting harder, but he’s a bit better today.

Sandy (one of our rabbits) stopped eating after her vaccination. She needs hand-feeding, fluids, and constant monitoring. Today there’s a small improvement — and in sanctuary life, sometimes “a little better” means everything.

This place is full of joy, softness, and deeply moving moments. But it also holds stress, long nights, and the quiet fear of not knowing what comes next.

Today marks a profoundly symbolic moment in my life—one filled with grief, hope, and a deep sense of purpose. Our first sanctuary dog, Lucky, formerly known as Rufus, arrived heartworm positive, abandoned, and in need of love. His rescue means more to me than words can express, especially as it coincides with the anniversary of my father’s passing.

Infinite Hearts Dog Sanctuary is more than just a rescue—it’s a way for me to heal, honor my father’s memory, and create meaning from the pain I’ve carried. My father’s death left a void that has shaped much of who I am, and saving Lucky feels like a sign. Giving him a second chance symbolizes the compassion I want to bring into the world and the comfort I want to provide to every soul—whether animal or human—who comes into our care.
