do they celebrate their birthday? why or why not?
Character Development Questions - Still Accepting
He absolutely does not. He will go out of his way to avoid it at all costs. There was a time when he would spend it just drinking his feelings and emotions away, but that stopped after Piers died when he gave up drinking. He definitely smokes more on his birthday than he does on a regular day. Also, if someone does happen to draw attention to it or insist that they do something he doesn't act shitty to them, he does graciously accept even if it kills him a little on the inside, he understands the good intentions in the gesture. Besides, he's used to Claire always trying to make it a better day for him.
Now... Why does he go so hard on avoiding the day and not celebrating?
When he was 16, Chris and his family, including Claire, went on a weekend excursion to celebrate his birthday on December 17th. It was driving back home when his entire life changed forever. They were involved in a horrible wreck and when Chris came to, he was only able to get his 10 year old sister and himself out in time before the car caught fire and took the lives of their parents. Unknown to Chris, their mother died on impact. He did everything in his power to shield his sister from seeing the incident.
