A little bit further. Only a little bit further.
I had my arm around Clint, yanking his ass from the tower as it crumbled in smoke and flames. The rigged-up suit whirred, and I had Deja Vu back to the time I escaped that camp in the Middle East.
One of Lokiās hellhounds burst out of the flames in front of us, snapping at our ankles as we flew over its head.
āClint, shoot the bastard!"Ā I shouted. The sound of his arrow was drowned out by the sound of metal screeching and bending as it began to melt and sink under its own weight.Ā
I dragged us higher. Clint was coughing - from the smoke or the beam that had fallen on his back earlier, I wasnāt sure.
"Come on, Clint, we can do this. We can make it. Weāre so close. Hang with me buddy. A little farther and we can get out of here. A little bit farther - "
I let out a cry as my suit stopped flying. Pain shot up through my back and I toppled out of the sky, a bird shot down, and I plummeted onto the rooftop below us. Metal scraped across concrete and I slid to a halt, leaving behind a trail of blood and red paint.
Clint fell a few feet away - to his credit he already had his bow and arrow out, though he looked like he was having some trouble breathing.
"You were really willing to destroy your home in a foolish attempt to escape me?"
My neck wrenched backward as my helmet was torn off my head, hair gripped tight in slender fingers. My heart sank - or it wouldāve, if my heart was still in place - and I let out a cry of anger, anguish, all of those bottled up emotions Iād been holding onto as I fought against the hands that dragged me to my feet.
"What a naughty husband you are, dearest. What sort of punishment were you trying to achieve? Torture? Death?"
Lokiās voice, although venomous,Ā purredĀ into my ear. I jerked my head away from the lips that brushed against my ear, skin crawling.
"What, am I still not pleasing in this form? Would you greet death more openly if it was delivered by someone you held dear?"
The hand that held me changed: it became smaller, fingers even more delicate, and the face that pressed close to mine grew soft and warm. Locks of red hair fell in the corner of my eye and his - no,Ā her - lips curved upward, the wicked smile lookingĀ so fucking wrongĀ on her beautiful face.
"You knew that you shouldnāt have done that, Anthony. Really, what were you thinking?"
It wasĀ herĀ voice that came from between those lips.Ā HerĀ hands that held me hostage -
AndĀ herĀ hand that took control of my arm, lifting the blaster on my palm up to level with Clintās head.
"Fuck, no,Ā no!ā I shouted, shaking within my suit, fighting against my armor that had turned rigid. The blaster whirred to life, Pepperās - no,Ā LokiāsĀ - fingers dancing across the metal. He regarded me with Pepperās eyes, a mix of anger and amusement coloring his features. Pepperās free hand stroked my cheek, and her body pressed close to mine - it was a perverted mimicry of the times Iād flown with Pepper at my side, or the press conferences, or all the times Iād held Pepper against me in our bed.
"Youāre going to hurt another one, Tony. All because of your pride," she sighed, shaking her head. "Youāre going to let Clint die - just like with me."
I turned to look at Clint, hoping, praying even that he had a plan that I hadnāt thought of yet. Heād barely managed to make it onto his knees though - hell, I didnāt blame him, after having a support beam fall on him like that. Still, his eyes met mine and IĀ knew.Ā I couldnāt let this happen. Not again. Not like with Pepper.
"Clint, youāve gotta shoot me man," I called to him. My voice rose, nerves reaching a breaking point as the blaster on my palm began to glow with blue light.
"No way in hell, Tony," he shouted back. He tried to stand up - but fell back to the ground, letting out a loud shout of pain. He had to have broken ribs.
"Clint, please, youāll die if you donāt. Just - just shoot me, right through the head. Make it quick."
"Thereās no way Iām enduring any more of this shit without you. Iām not that nice."
"Right back at you, you dumb fucker."
My heart pounded in my ears, mind screaming like a little girl as my palm grew hot with lethal fury.
"Clint,Ā please!ā I begged. He couldnāt die. He couldnāt leave. I couldnāt be the one to kill him. I couldnāt take it.
āPlease,Ā Clint, hell, remember the suicide pact? Letās make it a homicide pack. Just shoot me.Ā Dammit,Ā Clint, shoot me!ā
To his credit, he managed to lift of the bow. My skull felt like there was something hammering inside it by now, right behind my eyes. I stared at him, even though the light in my palm had grown so bright that heād turned into a shadow against it.
āIāll see you in Hell!ā I shouted to him over the high-pitched shrieking of energy. I prayed to the silent gods that he could hear me.
The blaster reached fever pitch. Pepper-Loki pressed to me, fingers stroking my face. I closed my eyes, imagining that the fingers caressing my face really were herās and letting myself believe that, in a moment, Iād actually see her again.
The blaster fired. The arrow flew.
Itāll be just like falling asleepā¦
