Reply to @remisims (and a rant about UVs) (and a rant about tumblr)
remisims “Maxis mapping is almost evil, hehe. These look wonderful!”
OK first I totally failed at replying to replies! Tumblr’s just as evil as whoever did the mapping at Maxis, eheh. I know I’m a bit OCD when it comes to UV map -- a healthy, logical UV map is a bit like a beautiful jigsaw, and I love when a mesh is cleverly mapped. I account for this when I look at other people’s maps, because, well, OCD, and I can’t be too harsh. But this? THIS?!? Why, Maxis?
Not only have they cut out the wood bit that’s behind the handles from the main area of the front doors, but they haven’t even overlapped the left and front sides properly. Which means I can’t get a proper ambient map for this area. Which means I have to clean it up manually, and sure, that’s not too difficult, but it’s also stupid and shouldn’t be necessary.
There’s also a mind-boggling overlap on top of the dresser that I’m sure they thought no one would notice.
Anyway, I would remap it, but for that, I’d need to retopo the whole mesh (the triangulation, especially at the bottom, is quite bad and is also a source of artefacts which I could well live without). So manual (2D) clean-up it is.
More the pity, as the mesh itself is quite cute.
Remi, I tip my hat to you. I haven’t looked at Maxis’ hair, but I assume the mapping is even worse. I wonder if they thought people would only do flood-fill recolours, and didn’t expect them to actually know a thing or two about texturing 3D objects.
Now, rant about Tumblr, although it’s more about the spam-bots, really. Some arse reblogged my previous post saying they could do the full monty on live camera. OMG, so cool, much excite! Not. Anyway, sorry for anyone who’s seen that post, I only just noticed. I try to nuke bot-followers as soon as I spot them, but I wish Tumblr could find a way to prevent this from happening. I’m aware it must be technically quite tricky, if not down-right impossible... so not really a rant against Tumblr. Just a general grumble-mumble.
