It seemed for one long, existential moment like a metaphor for his life.

'For crying out loud!' Charles threw a balled-up napkin at his face. 'If you go all German philosopher on me, Erik, you are sleeping in the yard tonight.'

Erik scowled and started lapping at the rivulets of hokey pokey trailing down his wrist. He was rewarded twice over, because Charles made a choked sound, and Alex looked around in time to catch Charles's horndog expression and made his own choked noise.

One of rage and pain, which was a lovely counterpoint to Charles's continued moaning as Erik kept sucking at his own wrist and thinking filthy thoughts.

'I'm gonna be sick,' Alex muttered, hunching his shoulders and angling himself the other way on the park bench. 'God damned letches.'

'Don't fret,' Charles said absently. 'Henry will come around.'

I am using a pair in a gig coming up but only in the sense of using it to enhance someone else's drum beats with the occasional high tone. I need to learn how to use those properly...

They are tough for me, but I started learning them when I was a beginner, so I know how to do the basics.

Very occasionally there are zill workshops or classes, but I think there's a dvd named How to become a Killer Ziller from Michele Joyce? Might be helpful.

What manner of beast, dare I ask, is a zill?

It's finger cymbals or sagats.  You play them in different rhythms while you are dancing.
