When a storekeeper in America claims “Christian” victimhood for refusing to sell cake or flowers to gay people, I feel infuriated on behalf of my friends who have truly suffered. Those storekeepers lose zero credibility among circles they care about and their “stand” costs them nothing other than disapproval from people whose opinions for which they care nothing; in fact, these “defenders of the faith” become heroes in their social groups. They win the approval of their in-group while treating their out-group with contempt. If there’s anything we learn from Jesus it’s that we need to treat our out-groups with love and acceptance.
