When a storekeeper in America claims āChristianā victimhood for refusing to sell cake or flowers to gay people, I feel infuriated on behalf of my friends who have truly suffered. Those storekeepers lose zero credibility among circles they care about and their āstandā costs them nothing other than disapproval from people whose opinions for which they care nothing; in fact, these ādefenders of the faithā become heroes in their social groups. They win the approval of their in-group while treating their out-group with contempt. If thereās anything we learn from Jesus itās that we need to treat our out-groups with love and acceptance.
