The Welcome
I've (re)started this Tumblr out of my desire to have a place to explore questions about storytelling. Originally I had thought it would be a place where I would pick a single question and explore it over a set period of time (1 month, 3 months, 6 months...). The problem was settling on a question!
The first one I thought of doing was something like "what makes a good adaptation?" There's no end of material here. The discussion of film adaptations alone could keep me busy for weeks. The problem--there's always a problem--was that our family is beginning a pretty busy period of our lives: six credits of coursework for me*, three for Siobhan**, a new baby on the way, a toddler who gets more precocious every day***, a possible move, a possible job search...it didn't seem like a good time to take on another focused project. So I looked at this idea again, and unfocused it.
It'll be a little more random. It's a place to hang things that catch my eye, first about re-storytelling, adaption and translation. What it'll become, I don't know. But welcome to this!
*Three of these credits are from a seminar named "The Sacramentality of Beauty in Arts and Literature". Maybe for a while this Tumblr will just be a place where I can process everything stemming from that unwieldy title.
**Siobhan's course has the much more inviting name, "Books, Children, and God". Maybe I'll steal material from our conversations and post it here.
***That toddler is really into her own stories right now, both in books and telling her own. Her latest favourite to retell consists of the words "walk!" "bridge." "boots!" It's about the time we went to the Burnaby Heritage Village with her Oma to see the Christmas lights. She got to do a lot of her own walking. She walked over a bridge. In her boots. Apparently it was memorable.Â
