Regency is a game built with the hopes of providing a group of friends with the tools necessary to tell a particular type of story. Jane Austen’s novels and the narratives therein are the inspiration for this game and likewise it shares a common ancestor with the broader genre of regency drama. Let me be perfectly clear: by no means is Regency meant to be a time capsule. The historical era which forms its setting was marked by distinct misogyny, racism, and imperialism; none of which are admirable traits of the era. If you and your group of friends are historical experts and want to tell a historically accurate narrative in that era, by all means feel welcome. For the rest of us I would invite you to tell a story in a regency era that never was: make it queer, make it polyamorous, make it racially and ethnically diverse. Tell the story that Jane Austen would have written in a better world. Most of all, have fun with it.
