A masquerade. Â Evelyn was practically skipping as she made her way to the ball room they had been instructed on. Â She loved when events like this were done, as it meant there would be dancing and laughter. Â Tensions were high among the countries, but with the masks similar to the one she currently wore it would be easier to forget outward biases and simply enjoy themselves.
There was already music, and as she got closer she could not hold back the smile that spread across her face. Â She stopped outside, listening to the voices that already seemed to be enjoying themselves within, and she sucked in a breath. Â She wondered if she would recognize anyone, despite their mask, or if she herself would be recognized. Â She loved the idea of being unknown and mysterious, especially as it meant she could be more herself without needing to worry about how it made England seem.
Her excitement was turning to nervousness, a bit of stage fright was something she always dealt with before attending any official or semi official affair. Â She needed to calm herself, so she stepped aside, and a little further down and around the corner where less were likely to run into her. Â She closed her eyes, pretending she was already inside. Â She imagined it all in her head, her body moving although she was alone in the darkened corner. Â If she went through the motions sheâd be more prepared (and thus less nervous) for the real thing.
First she nodded to those about her in greeting to those around her as she made her way further in.  Perhaps sheâd catch the eye of a certain English knight, who would come to her by an invisible tug of recognition.  Perhaps he would wonder who she could be and why this explainable tug brought them together.  They wouldnât say a word to each other, but onto the floor to dance together, letting their steps and the music be their conversationâŚâŚ..Â
She heard a footfall very close and she froze mid dance step, her eyes opening quickly as she turned toward the noise. Â Embarrassment at being caught in her own fantasy had her quickly attempting to cover up what sheâd been doing by straightening her gown and avoiding looking at the stranger. Â She was scolding herself in her own mind for being so foolish, wishing sheâd just stepped into the masquerade instead.
