'Wouldn't you like to feel better? Wouldn't you rather not be angry?' I sighed and put a hand on my hip. 'No, I don't think I would.' I said it as a knee-jerk reaction, but as the words settled over me, I recognized it was true. What would I be, if not angry? Who would I be? 'It's sort of like, my whole personality,' I added in a jokey tone.
Celia Laskey, from So Happy for You
caretaker isn’t able to care for whumpee anymore. They’re aggressive, desperate for attention yet panicking if its given and unable to care for themselves. Caretaker knows its not their fault, but it’s just too much for one person to heal. And god, caretaker knows that being taken to any sort of hospital would just make it worse. they’d never forgive caretaker for “giving up on them.” This leads to caretaker making an arguably worse choice than any of the choices available. They yell at whumpee to shut up and stay put. Stay in their bedroom. Stop yelling. Stop bothering caretaker as they work to *pay* for the ability to care for whumpee. It’s enough to make it clear to both of them. Whumpee doesn’t want help, and caretaker can’t help them. Other than their physical needs being met, caretaker stops bothering with helping whumpee deal with the trauma. It’ll just lead to screaming and fighting at the very thought of comfort. Whumpee’s being taken care of, but it’s by an uncaring, unloving caretaker. even if they’re alive, they’ve still been forgotten.
