What Is Meant To Be
Late last year, an unfortunate incident befell upon me; a turn of event that changed everything that I had planned. Everything that I imagined my life to be, became mere wishes stored in boxes labelled unfulfilled dreams. I was extremely disappointed.
To make matters worse, I felt that I had no control whatsoever to the occurrence of the incidence. It was something out of my hands, something that I had no influence at all. Trying to rationalise all these, I believed that Power that Be had planned something for me. THERE HAS TO BE A MEANING TO ALL THIS, I said to myself.Â
But is it true?
I’d like to believe that everything happens for a reason. An interaction of causes that result in an event that have a meaning to us. I had a motorbike accident because I was careless but it also reminded me to be more careful on the road. Granted, the causes may not be within our control but there HAS to be a meaning behind it, right?
It’s a question that I’ve asked myself time and again. It had left me wondering and at times felt frustrated and depressed. I couldn’t seem to find the meaning and lessons in all of these. I’ve paid my dues, I ticked all the boxes and felt like it’s time that I started reaping some benefits. But it didn’t turn out that way. I still am left in a situation that I hoped I had climbed out of after working my ass of. It felt terrible. It felt terrible for months.
I was in a funk for months. Working and all that, but it never felt really good. Something was always ‘wrong’.
Then came a conversation that I had with an old friend. It was not a session where I poured my hearts out trying to gain sympathy and a place to vent. It was just a catch-up. It was simply a conversation of what have you done for the past few years, do you remember this and we should do this again.
But to me, it was beyond that. It was an epiphany.Â
From this conversation, I realised that opportunities are abound ahead. There are so many things that I can do and the incident doesn’t have to be a defining characteristic in my life. Choices that I can make to turn things around. I started a new path towards true acceptance. To really accept everything that happened to me and start moving forward: start making meaning to my life.Â
It was a new beginning.
The Higher Being may indeed have plans in store for me. That all of these were indeed for a reason. But I’ve gotten it all wrong. Instead of trying to guess whatever that is, it is up to me to take charge and make that meaning for myself. Stop being a passive agent in my life and start taking the steering wheel. Make choices that make me happy. Make choices that make meaning. Start living.
