Specifically what I have learned recently is something everyone should know naturally.

Recently I had decided I would have a game based on the background  of a PC who was very one dimensional. The idea was that focusing on his own background he would be forced into developing his character. He would have a decision of siding with his tribe (which was dying off due to story reasons) or the imperium. It was a great plot thread in my mind. There was temptation, duty, loyalty, all of what was important in a game. I only forgot one important thing,

That was of course the agency of the player.

When given the choice the player (who was a shoot first ask questions later guy who I was trying to develop due to distinct lack of characterization) choose death by cop. He chose to shoot the big boss on the back of the head. Of course the boss survived  and unfortunately the PC died, but this taught me one thing that was important.
