So many moons ago, long, long, long before ‘Stranger Things’ breathed new life into it, before ‘Wizards of the Coast’ and ‘Vox Machina’, I used to play Dungeons and Dragons. Now the game was a very different beast back then, Wizards started life with one D4 of hit points, 1 spell and no caltrops, and it took more than a ‘long rest’ to get you back to full hit points. So to a soundtrack of ‘Yes’, ‘Rush’, ‘Pink Floyd’ and ‘Marillion’ we used to play D&D into the small hours of the night, with only graph paper, our matching order and our febrile imagination to see us out of the other side of the dungeon, past orcs, ogres, purple worms and the odd wight. No tech, no DnD Beyond, just life or death at the spin of a battered D20 which often would just not stop rolling, particularly if the cat saw it.

My preference was generally to be the DM, I mean, playing god, creating worlds and never finding yourself at the mercy of those evil dice, what was not to like.
