Long-tailed Shrike, Whinchat, Clouded Yellows and more on the Oxfordshire/Gloucestershire border near Eastleach Martin 01/08/2026 and an Emperor dragonfly at Lakeside Country Park 31/07/2026.
The photos in this set are two of the Long-tailed Shrike, a view from the walk to where we saw it and the Emperor on my lunch time walk at Lakeside Country Park yesterday.
We don’t go on many non-local twitches outside of when on holiday in areas but a famous current UK rarity that we’ve heard a lot about is the Long-tailed Shrike in the Cotswolds. We took the opportunity to make a trip there today and were astonished to get some stupendous views of this absolutely stunning grey, black and sunset-rear coloured bird. Seeing it on trees, in flight and diving down to the well vegetated ground to catch the insects it’s been feeding on was amazing. I was in my element watching it, drinking in glorious views of it and trying for photos. One of my birds of the year for sure and one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.
It’s not something I’ll often get the opportunity to see again as it’s native to Asia with its breeding range spanning from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to parts of South-East Asia. It’s only the third UK record and the second this year but the first for England with the previous two at South Uist and Fife in Scotland. So it’s a real vagrant and a brilliant third new bird for me this year after two straying American waders at home in Hampshire in the winter and spring Killdeer and American Golden Plover respectively. The old … are like buses line has come out for the two UK Long-tailed Shrikes this year and it’s a bit like that for us and seeing shrikes; we didn’t see one for five years before two Great Grey Shrikes in the New Forest either side of the new year last winter so it was nice to follow that up with this. It’s my twelfth shrike sighting overall of four species seen in my life now also including Red-backed Shrike and Brown Shrike. These butcher birds are fascinating and always striking birds to see.
It was generally a great afternoon out in nature on a great bit of rich farmland as I was also excited to see my first Whinchat of the year another stunning bird that was an upcoming target species and yet more Clouded Yellows with at least three seen, the butterfly of the moment being everywhere it seems in the southern part of the country. I don't think I'd ever seen three in a day before and I've certainly never seen them on seven occasions in a year which is what I'm up to now for this year so far. Yellowhammer, Whitethroat, Red Kite, Sparrowhawk, Common Blue, Small Heath, common toadflax and my first chicory of the year were other highlights. It was lovely to see Red Kites going through a strong area for them, Buzzard, Common Tern over the Thames, Cattle Egrets and dogwood berries on the journey there and home. An exciting summer trip seeing special wildlife and I’m grateful to the landowner that opened up their field to park in encouraging a donation to go to charity making it easy to get to the bird once in the area and those we know and met today for all the advice on getting there and seeing it.

Yesterday, I saw a red kite soaring above the city! 🤩
Today, I got approached by a creepy man in a thick winter coat zipped up to the chin (at midday, 30°c / 86°f). 😱
