Very rarely do I give concept albums a second thought, but Brooklyn based Red Bedlam’s latest effort “Dusk” has restored my faith in the art of story telling. “Dusk” tells the journey of Red’s travels through a desert like nightmare on a journey to his lost love. Covering themes of murder, ghosts, and self-reflection, this haunting soundtrack leaves the listener content, as if they had just leapt out of the epic tale themselves.
“Looking Glass” is the most theatrical of all the tracks on “Dusk.” with a beautiful horn arrangement that makes you almost feel the heat of the sun as the main character trumps though this imaginary desert. “Dark Horizon” (song above) quickly hits you with a dizzying waltz-like sound. All of the songs feature Bedlam's fetching and unique vocal style and story telling that puts you smack-dab in the middle of the story.
As if this beautiful musical endeavor weren’t enough, accompanying the physical release is an illustrated 32-page short story. All in all this is the most cohesive body of work I have stumbled upon on the main site. For the first time in a long time, I'm deeply immersed in the story and cant wait to see what Red Bedlam comes up with next.
