Queen Ahmose-Nefertari (circa 1570-1530 B.C.) was an active participant, along with her husband King Ahmose, in the final defeat and ejection from Africa of the hated Hyksos invaders and occupiers. As such, she was regarded as a national hero and one of the outstanding figures in African history. Indeed, she was a co-founder of the glorious 18th dynasty of #Kmt — called “The greatest royal family that ever mounted a throne.” Ahmose-Nefertari was born a royal heiress to the throne and became one of Kmt’s most beloved and audacious women. After her husband’s brilliant reign, she ruled the land with her son, King Amenhotep I. It would not be inaccurate to say that Ahmose-Nefertari was venerated, a practice that continued for more than 600 years after her death. To her memory was attached a special priesthood, who recited in her honor a prayer only used in addressing the pantheon of the most powerful deities in the land. Ahmose-Nefertari was titled “God’s Wife of Amen” and held a position as a priestess in the national religious center. John Henrik Clarke said in Africans at the Crossroads: African World Revolution “Powerful people cannot afford to educate the people that they oppress because once you are truly educated, you will not ask for power. You will take it. Speaking from my own experience completing high school I don’t remember covering any topics that provided any historical context to my Caribbean ancestry or of them achieving anything that wasn’t facilitated by their previous captors. When it came to Black History month the same repetitive program that skims over the 60’s, 70’s and the Black inventors of the 20th century was rolled out year in year out. As if that’s all there is. Conveniently, the curriculum doesn’t go far back enough to talk about the vast, wealthy kingdoms of West Africa like Mali or Songhai or to the Moors of North Africa that pulled Europe from the dark ages. It must be made clear; it’s not that the information isn’t known to be taught, it’s simply because it doesn’t support the oppressive construct. Understanding exactly what John Henrik Clarke meant when he said “Powerful people cannot afford to educate the people that they oppress,” it was no shock or surprise to find out that many brothers and sisters not just in but beyond my social circles had very little interest in their culture or any type of desire to find out more about where they’re from. Worse-still the connection between them and the continent was almost non-existent, this feeling of disassociation towards Africa is no accident, it’s by design.
