So I've been thinking about this for a while now, ever since Eddie got himself onto the Reboot train. And while I like the idea in general terms, so far the only actors connected to the idea are himself, Saul Rubinek, and Alison Scagliotti. And that bothers me, and I was thinking about why it bothers me, and then I realized:
For me to love a show - as in, actively love, be invested in, write fan fic for, blorbo, etc etc. - I need a character I can relate to. If a show doesn't have that, I'll still enjoy it, and watch and rewatch it (Leverage fills this tier, for example), but it's just that: a different tier.
And I watched Warehouse 13 for Myka Ophelia Bering. That was 80%, easily, of why I tuned in.
I'll put the rest under a readmore - if this clicks with you, by all means go on reading; if not, I don't want this to clog up your dash.
Myka Bering was that character for me in W13, just as Deanna Troi was in TNG, and Captain Janeway in Voyager. These characters fit in one or both of two categories: I see myself in them (Myka, Deanna), and/or I want to be their girlfriend (Janeway, HG Wells). I need that very personal connection to really dig my teeth into a show - and without that character, I lose most of my interest in that show. A reboot without Myka just wouldn't pique my interest - with one exception: if said reboot gave me a similar character, similarly centered, that I could latch onto instead.
And no, Claudia doesn't fit that bill. Claudia is the quirky prodigy, happy-go-lucky, lots of pop culture references which I have no hope of understanding, but most of all she's young. And even if, obviously, she won't be that young in a reboot, that is still the drawer she inhabits in my mind: Claudia is my little sister, and thus not a character I see myself in or want to woo. And no matter how they develop her character, she won't become that for me, because before all that, she will remain my little sister.
Myka was my peer in age, feeling of responsibility, the way she cared and was protective of everything, the way she didn't need saving even though she did need a hug or five. I could watch, in her, a character that I related to on sometimes a bone-deep level, have adventures, solve puzzles, save the day, fall in love with another character I totally fell in love with too.
If I don't get that in a reboot, I am not interested. (well, maybe 20% interested, but it will, at best, land in the Leverage tier, not in the "I will go feral over this show" tier that Warehouse is in now.)
Again: it doesn't *have* to be Myka (much though I would adore it, I don't want Jo to have to endure again what she has hinted at, and outright said, if she doesn't want to or doesn't think it would be worth it. And enough time has passed, I think, that even though she isn't on social media, the people responsible for the reboot could have gotten in contact with her and gotten her reply, and if that reply had been a yes, you know we would know. So I don't have much hope for it, tbh.) - it can be a different female character, but she would have to tick all those boxes that Myka ticked. And that includes, ABSOLUTELY INCLUDES, her being queer, or at the very least queer-coded.
I don't know if I can trust the people currently involved to give me that. And honestly I won't hold my breath.
And that is why I haven't gone feral over the idea of a reboot. If I had even the slightest whiff of Jo being involved in this, in a way that's doable, no: enjoyable for her (as in, more than just her forcing herself to in order to pay her bills), I would be all over it, I wouldn't shut up night or day. But as is? Eh.
