So I wrote this scene ages ago when I started my rebelcaptain fic A New Star along with the scene of Cassian meeting his baby for the first time, because these two were the strongest visuals that are in my head whenever I work on this fic. This is super far flung in the future, but Iâve written it as a drabble and I want to post it here now because my work on A New Star is done at a glacial pace.Â
BelĂ©n Erso-Andor may only be five years old, but she was smart enough to outwit the droid that herded the other children out of the bathroom and toward Ben Soloâs bedroom for the sleep over while the adults talked at the big dinner table. Whining about having to pee again once they reached the threshold of his room, she dashed back down the hall and pretended to go, even flushing the toilet a couple of times for the maximum effect. She peeked her head out to check that it was all clear, and sprinted towards the dining room.
The dining room was bigger than the apartment she and her parents lived in, but there were plenty of chairs for her to creep behind as they talked. Akbar had spotted her quickly with his giant, scary eyes, but he said nothing and drank as she approached her parents. Papa sat up straight in his chair, his head turned towards Benâs mom at the head of the table as she spoke.Â
âI believe we have a visitor,â Luke said from behind her.
BelĂ©n squeaked with surprise, but then glared up at the Jedi for giving her away and making the other adults gently laugh at her.Â
âBelĂ©n,â Papa said in a low, warning voice that grabbed her attention back. âYouâre supposed to be in bed.â
She sucked in her bottom lip as she thought about what to do next so she didnât have to go to bed so early with the other kids. Crying usually worked with Papa, but with the other adults around she knew heâd just carry her like a sack of potatoes back to the bedroom, so she wiped the tears that prickled at corners in her eyes with the back of her hand.
âSee, youâre sleepy. Go to bed,â he said.
She was sleepy, but she didnât want to go to bed. Instead, she clambered over his knees.
âBut I want to be with you, Papa,â BelĂ©n said as she put her arms around his neck and settled into his lap.
âYou need to be asleep. Weâre talking about very boring things out here,â Mama said.
âSo boring,â Papa sighed.
âStuff that will make you cry itâs so boring,â Benâs dad added before sipping from his cup.
BelĂ©n shook her head and kissed Papaâs cheek. âPlease Papa.â
âPlease, please, please, please, please,â she said, punctuating each plea with a kiss on his cheek.
She pulled away and they looked at each other, Papa looking so stern that the cracks and creases from his eyes spread out all the way to his beard. She pouted and let the hot tears fill the wells of her eyes that were the same sea glass green as Mamaâs.
Papa closed his eyes first and sighed in defeat. Belén snuggled up against his chest and gave Mama a small, victorious smile. Mama took the shawl off her shoulders and tucked Belén with it. Papa kissed the top of her hair, the bristles in his beard tickling her scalp. The adults laughed lightly or cooed.
âThe world better get ready for her if she can bend Andorâs will so easily,â Mon Mothma  said.
âI am opening an academy soon if youâre looking to hone her abilities,â Luke chuckled.
Papa rested his cheek against her head, his arms holding her tight.
âShe has my heart, but her mother taught her how to play the strings,â he said.
BelĂ©n could feel Papa smile in her hair as the adults laughed, Mama laughing the softest. The conversation changed to adult things with bigger words that she couldnât understand, so she focused on listening to the steady thrum of Papaâs heart. Its beat lulled her into resting her eyes for just a minute, just long enough to pretend what it felt like to be small like a baby again.
âI was tired of talking about politics anyway,â Han said.
The adults talked about things she didnât understand with big words she couldnât even guess at, and soon their words was just background noise. Sometimes her father would say something or he would laugh, and his voice echoed in his chest like it was a big, hollow cave. When he was quiet she counted his heartbeats up to ten, which was the highest she could go, and then count them all over and over.
