Announcement: DULAANG KALAY'S “THE WOMAN IN BLACK” SETS GALA PREMIERE ON OCT. 19
Dulaang Kalay and Word of Mouth Theater Philippines proudly present the gala premiere of “The Woman in Black” on October 19 – 8 p.m. at Teatrino, Greenhills, San Juan City. Additional performances are on October 20 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Dubbed as “the second longest running London-based play in history, “The Woman in Black” written by Susan Hill in 1983 was inspired by thoughts of desolation and fragments of memorial sorrow. As a critically-acclaimed novel, the primary ingredient for its development was the atmosphere the author was writing in. To be able to put together these scattered thoughts, Hill decided to go to places that exemplified the meaning of barrenness such as a lonely house facing the beach and a blanket of marshes that were layered out in the backside of the landscape.
In 1989, ITV (a British television network) produced a film of the novel directed by Herbert Wise and earned four BAFTA awards: Best Design, Best Film Sound, Best Make-Up and Best Original Television Music.
In 1993, BBC Radio 5 (a notable British network) aired a special 4-part adaptation of the novel which was directed by Chris Wallis. Subsequently, BBC Radio 4 broadcasted their own version adapted by Mike Walker and directed by John Taylor.
That same year, Stephen Mallatrat (a recognized writer best known for his work on Island At War, Coronation Street and The Forstyle Saga) launched his own stage based adaptation of the novel and since then it has become the second longest-running London-based play in history.
Early this year, British actor Daniel Radcliffe essayed the role of Arthur Kipps in a film adaptation directed by James Watkins.
Last August 31, a preview staged under the direction of William Elvin Manzano was produced and presented by Dulaang Kalay, the first student organization in South East Asia to stage this West End classic.
Due to numerous requests to restage the play, noted actors Jeremy Domingo and Reb Atadero shall reprise the roles of older Arthur Kipps and the young theater actor, respectively.
Jeremy Domingo is a 2011 BroadwayWorld.com Philippines award-winner (Best Featured Actor) for Tanghalang Pilipino’s American Hwangap, having appeared in over 85 theater productions since 1990. For Repertory Philippines, he was seen in A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino; Little Shop of Horrors; Dracula; A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Much Ado About Nothing; It Had To Be You; Our Town; The Mystery of Irma Vep and many more. Other credits include Hamlet in Hamlet Redux (Dulaang UP); The King of Siam in The King and I (Centerstage); Herr Zeller in The Sound of Music (Resorts World Manila) and most recently, Trigorin in The Seagull (Dulaang UP).
Jeremy co-founded Word of Mouth Theater Philippines in 2006, which produced Shakespeare’s Macbeth Unplugged; a staged reading of Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile; and the original musicals The Aqua Barkada (for RCBC); Maiden of the Sea (for Manila Ocean Park) and Flight of a Falcon (for Adamson University). “The Woman in Black” is Word of Mouth’s first co-production with Dulaang Kalay.
In other media, he has appeared in numerous local TV series and commercials, and presented for Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney-Asia from 2002 to 2006. A Creative Guild awardee, Jeremy has been Studio 23’s signature announcer since 1999.
Reb Atadero has a six year experience in theater and is a name synonymous with musical productions. Last seen in Ateneo Blue REPERTORY's 13 The Musical, Bare, Little Shop of Horrors and Dulaang UP's Rizal X, Reb can also be found doing other things inside and outside of the theater world as a musical director, kindergarten teacher, workshop instructor, training facilitator and host. William Manzano started his career in theatre in 2005 as a chorus member in Dulaang UP's 'St. Louis Loves Dem Filipinos'. Since then, he has appeared as an actor in numerous productions in and out of the University of the Philippines. In 2011, William has established himself as a songwriter for the theatre, beginning with a Filipino musical adaptation of 'Cyrano de Bergerac' for Dulaang Laboratoryo in UP. In July of the same year, he wrote music and lyrics in Dulaang UP's 'Rizal X'. He started 2012 writing the music for Word of Mouth Theater Philippines' "Flight of A Falcon", a musical on Adamson University's history. He also directs plays for Dulaang Kalay, an organization of students from Kalayaan College in Quezon City.
