I am from #theBronx and today's shot comes from there as well, since I'm in the old neighborhood today. This shot, from the family collection of Don Larson (who graciously agreed to share it), shows Cedar Avenue by the Major Deegan Expressway in May of #1962. A gaggle of motorcycles accompany what today are a interesting classics but 56 years ago were just basic road furniture. In the foreground, a '55 Ford sedan is in use. Across the street, a '59 Chevy peeks out behind a rare B-120 #InternationalTravelall. Ahead of the #IHC is a '61 #MercuryMonterey hardtop, with a lonely '55 #Studebaker commander up near the corner. A '61 #Chevy "bubble top" hardtop - probably an #Impala - is moving across the bridge over #I87, and in the opposite direction, the nose of a '60 Mercury wagon peeks out, with a '56 Olds nearby. Further up the street it's more #americancars save for a lone VW Beetle. #NYC actually had a pretty high percentage of imported cars back in the 1960s relative to other places in the country, but maybe not in this particular spot. In the distance is the High Bridge, the last remnant of the old Croton Aqueduct and NYC's oldest bridge, completed way back in 1848. Once a big attraction in the 19th century, the #HighBridge was closed by 1960 thanks to a lack of maintenance and, frankly, kids throwing things at boats in the 1950s. It reopened in 2015 and you can walk over it now. You can't see this view today, because in the early 1970s the shipbuilding facilities in the background were torn down and replaced with River Park Towers and Roberto Clemente State Park.
