Marcel Duchamp was born on this day in 1887. An artist who broke down the boundaries between works of art and everyday objects, he is perhaps best known for his irreverent “readymades.” One of the best (and most infamous) examples of a readymade is “Fountain.” Duchamp declared that the ordinary piece of plumbing had become art simply by signing it “R. Mutt 1917” and submitting it to the inaugural exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists—a concept almost as hotly debated today as it was then.
