I'm not often a fan of wordless picture books, but there's nothing quite like them for prompting discussion and imaginative thinking with young children. And if anyone can pull off a great wordless picture book, it's the incomparable Patrick McDonnell. "The Little Red Cat Who Ran Away and Learned His ABC's (The Hard Way)" (2017) is definitely my new favourite alphabet book! 📚📙📗 With nary a word (just each successive letter, in both capital and lowercase), the book follows the madcap adventure of a little cat, chased hither and yon by everything from wild animals to royalty, as we work our way through the alphabet. One each page, it is up to the reader to deduce that letter's representation in the scene--a wonderful opportunity to get kids using their imaginations and flexing their vocabulary.
