Reading for the Main Idea
Many students struggle with reading comprehension, and itâs often a very treatable problem. Â Academic reading â even at the high-school level â is rarely the most engaging or interesting thing, and many students spend so much time reading for school that they donât read outside of class. Â This combination can be a problem, because it can reinforce reading-comprehension problems.
Â
The root of many reading-comprehension issues is a lack of understanding the purpose of a given passage or chapter. Â After all, a student who fails to understand what is fundamentally being communicated will be unable to respond to the piece.

The central requirement to appreciate a piece of writing â be it a textbook, an assignment, or a novel â is to understand what itâs communicating.
Itâs a simple question, but itâs nevertheless the key to understanding a piece of writing. Â As a reader, you should step back and ask yourself, âWhat does this mean? Â What is it saying?â Â All of the individual parts of a paragraph â even of an entire chapter, story, or novel â are centered around a hypothesis; that is, what the writer wants to tell the reader. Â By asking yourself what he or she is trying to tell you, youâre paying active attention to the piece and challenging yourself to understand it, rather than going through the motions and just reading the individual words. Â Ask yourself this question as often as you need to.
If youâre actively reading but youâre still struggling to understand the main idea, talk to the teacher. Â He or she may better understand whatâs preventing you from understanding the larger picture. Â Your teacher may also be able to point you towards helpful practice tests or set up an appointment with a dedicated Austin tutor.
Reading comprehension is one of the most important skills a student can develop, because itâs a skill that we all need to use a dozen times a day in our daily life. Â At Concepts Mastery, we are committed to helping students break through their walls and overcome the educational challenges they face. Â Contact us today by calling 512-767-5323.
