I was watching a clip about RDS-37, the first Soviet hydrogen bomb, and when you see one of these things in a high-altitude burst, before the fireball touches the ground and turns into a mushroom cloud, it really strikes you how fucked up, sc-fi those weapons are.
Because the way such bomb works (in layman's terms), it combines light hydrogen isotopes into heavier elements in a process of thermonuclear fusion, releasing immense amount of energy (heat), right?
You know what else does that in nature? The stars.
Mankind literally came up with a weapon whose destructive potential is based on generating a short-living miniature star.
