Her patrols were finally starting to feel like a habit again. The first few months had been full of jumpiness, and Allison’s eyes tracing every shadow in the preserve while her mind imagined what could be hiding where the moonlight couldn’t reach. Now? She felt less like prey and more like the predator she was, like the matriarch she was. Allison didn’t think the preserve was sentient, but it seemed more peaceful now that she wasn’t jumping out of her skin at every creak and groan of the trees. The section that she was walking had a few normal hunting traps that her father had set up in part to maintain his image as a normal hunter throughout town, so she was checking them as she went. As the brunette knelt to inspect the first nearly invisible trip wire, she paused. She more felt than saw the other person moving through the trees. Allison didn’t reach for the crossbow hanging on her back, but she threaded her fingers through the cool metal ring of one of her daggers just in case.  “Nice night out, huh?” Â
